    Friday night lights were back on at Adam Wernsman Field as the Haxtun Bulldogs hosted Wichita County in the season home opener last week. The Bulldogs picked up their first win and in front of a home crowd with a 22-12 win on Friday, Sept. 6.     The Lady Bulldogs notched a win on their home court Friday night with a sweep over the Lady Indians from Wichita County, Kan. The win puts Haxtun at 5-2 on the season and according to Colorado High School Activities Association RPI rankings seventh in the state in 2A action as of Tuesday morning, Sept. 10.     The Fleming Wildcats hosted their home opener last week in a contest against the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos. Fleming notched their first win of the season with the annual homecoming game on the horizon. The Wildcats and Broncos battled Friday night in contest that would end with Fleming on top by just two points, 35-33.     The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs may have had a slow 0-2 start in their first outing this season but they came back with a vengeance, picking up four wins on the road last week. The Bulldogs took down Holyoke on Thursday and later defeated Otis, Dayspring Christian Academy and Arickaree in tournament play at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling on Saturday.     The Fleming Lady Wildcats traveled to Sterling last weekend where they took part in the Northeastern Junior College Volleyball Tournament. The local squad swept their first two matches of the day before falling to the Merino Lady Rams in four sets.     The Fleming Wildcats opened the 2024 football season with a trip to Dalton, Neb., on Friday where they fell to the Leyton Warriors. Leyton opened with a high-scoring first half, shutting out the visiting Wildcats, 32-0. The Wildcats put 14 points on the scoreboard throughout the second half while Leyton added another 10 to close with a 42-14 victory.     The Bulldog football team kicked off the 2024 season in the exact same place the 2023 season ended ... in the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.
