The Haxtun Harvest

Goldie Blake, Haxtun, was one of 15 students who presented a music recital at the University of Colorado last Thursday night.

A typical spring blizzard visited the Haxtun section Thursday, moving tons of soil and bringing a veritable fog of dust throughout the day.

Funeral services are Friday afternoon for Henry Frye, 19 son of Mrs. Celia Frye, Dailey. Septic sore throat and complications of quinsy were understood to be the cause of death. He was employed at a dairy in Denver and was also attending school in that city. He was taken ill about a week ago and died Feb. 19.

Marvin, the year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Daley, suffered horrible burns about the face Monday morning when he obtained a can of lye from a high shelf and rubbed the burning alkali on his face. He was brought o a physician immediately. After treatment, he is said to be getting along as satisfactorily as could be expected. Mr. and Mrs. Daley operated the service station and lunch room the highway at the edge of town.


Highland Center News - A large force of men graveled the stretch of road from Philorado school house to the new highway Tuesday and Wednesday.

Haxtun's Boosters came out in full force to watch the Haxtun-Merino basketball game Friday night in the hope that Haxtun could upset the defending state champions. Haxtun did not but came ever so close, losing by three points.

Haxtun's seventh grade basketball team capped off it's season by winning the Akron tournament at the end of January. Troy Burley, Tim Fetzer, Kent McDaniel, Jerry Lewis, Tim Thompson, Trevor Thompson, Don Nolin, Rodney Anderson, Troy Anderson, and Heath Weiss.


Fairfield News - Mrs. Ellie Jeffers and Brenda visited with Mrs. Esther Bartlett and Charles and Mrs. Ola Bishop at a nursing home in Sterling. They also visited with Corinna Jeffers.

A bridal shower was held at the church Saturday afternoon honoring Debra McCoin, bride-elect of Brad Michael. Hostess for the occasion were; Peg Ricker, Patty Jeffers, Lela Ruch, Velma Garretson, Grace Brotherton, and Mary Ruch. The church was decorated with hearts and painted an decorated tree limbs.

Clarville and Wages News - About 175 attended the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Fryrear in Haxtun on Sunday.


Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Harding, Todd and Lori, attended the wedding of Arlen Forbes I Brush Saturday. Sharri went to the Amherst-Holyoke game and was a Saturday overnight guest of Marsha Krueger of Amherst.

Jean Rosenfield went to Yuma on Tuesday morning to read a book to Brent's kindergarten class. She and Shanna attended to Valentine party on Thursday.

Rockland News - Leon and Dorothy Fezter, Dale and Evelyn Reyher went to Holyoke Friday evening where they enjoyed the Ozark Country Jubilee. They visited at the home of LaVerne and Maeola Gibbs afterwards.

Those enjoying sleigh riding at the Fred J. Fetzers Sunday afternoon were Ken, Jill and two friends, David, Danny and Anita, Bob, Kevin and Tim.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Briggs and Dale were Sunday dinner guests at Phyllis Freemyer and Christy.


Fleming News - Extensive remolding of the Fleming library-Town Hall have been started. There will be a big change in the building.

The Hulse family was very shaken Saturday night when the Hulse house in the country burned down. The house was being rented and no one was home when the fire was discovered and the Fleming Fire Department was called. The house was leveled. The late George Hulse and his brother lived in the house prior to the marriage of George and Josephine, not both deceased, raised their family there.

On Sunday the birthday anniversary of Mrs. Dean (Barbara) Miles was observed in the home of her folks, Mr. and Mrs. Don Wisdom, Amy and Gary. With them were the Miles' children, Jodi, Paula, Kevin and Kristie.

Joey Boerner, sixth grade, won grand champion at the Haxtun School science fair on Feb. 17 with his project on the behavior or light.

Haxtun eighth grader Laura Carper beat out 85 contestants to take first place in the district spelling bee in Lone Star on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Eighth grader Andrea Ervasti and sixth grader Jacki Smith are also eligible to go on to the state bee in Denver, March 25. Andrea placed 13th and Jacki 14th. Laura is the daughter of Tim and Arlene Carper, Haxtun. Andrea is the daughter of Tom and Carol Ervasti, Haxtun. Jacki is the daughter of Gordon and Jo Smith, Haxtun.

Scott Hadeen graduated Feb. 11 from basic training with U.S. Marinesat Camp Pendelton, Calif. He plans to return to Camp Pendelton for 18 days of combat training before going on to either Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, or Fort Leonard Wood, MO., to continue with military police, his chosen specialty. He is the son of Terry and Phyllis Hadden, Haxtun.

The Haxtun-Fleming Herald

Kaleb Wood and Camden Goss recently raised almost $400 to donate to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Wood, a fourth grader and Goss, a fifth grader, were impacted after seeing pictures on television of children who lost their parents in the disaster and decided t visit classrooms and talk to fellow classmates at Fleming Schools to collect money to send to World Vision, one of the first organizations to provide relief in Haiti.

Local artist Nancy Dee recently received word that on of her pastel paintings, "Across From Hazel's" has been selected for an upcoming exhibit at Denver International Airport and the State Capitol.
