There are seven main purposes of the proposed extension of six branch shelter belts of trees from the great national shelter belt through western Nebraska and Kansas and eastern Colorado to the Rocky Mountains: 1. To check the prevailing north and south winds. 2. To protect valuable top soil from being blown away by winds. 3. To save soil moisture. 4. To provide work for thousands of farmers in fencing the land, summer fallowing the soil, and cultivating and caring for the trees. 5. To improve the appearance of region. 6. To shelter farm homes, crops and livestock. 7. To encourage tree planting more generally in this region. These 10-mile-wide shelter belts will be planted if the federal government approves the project.
