The Haxtun Harvest

Wesley McCune of Haxtun was one of six students chosen recently for membership in Adelphi, honorary debating society at the University of Colorado. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. McCune and is a sophomore.

The Rev. Luther Stromquist, who was pastor of the Elim Lutheran Church at Haxtun for a number of years, died Friday, April 26, 1935, at Lindsborg, Kan. He is survived by his wife Ida, daughters Gwendolyn and Lorraine, and son Arthur.

John A. Berg, 84 pioneer rancher, died April 30. He was born at Elks Vestergotland, Sweden, and came to America in 1881.

Fairfield News - The church was filled to capacity last Sunday morning when the Bible class of 13 pupils was confirmed: Harold and Floy Ahnstedt, Viola Wahlstrom, Esther Bennett, Dorothy and Harry Franson, Eleanor and Irene Ahnstedt, Harold Ruch, Alice Hadeen, Margaret Mattson, Phyllis Anderson, and Irene Falk.

News from Berlin - The disaster to the United States Navy's airship Macon was revived speculation here as to the ultimate worth of lighter-than-air craft and has thrown into sharp relief the plans if a German inventor for a 170-passenger flying boat designed to cross the Atlantic from Hamburg to New York in 16 to 18 hours. The plane would cost $1,000,000. Such a plane would be invaluable to British interests as a link with India and the colonies.

Haxtun Senior Mitch Miller accepts a $300 scholarship from Phillips County Sheriff Clair Pillard presented on behalf of the County Sheriffs of Colorado. Over 700 applied for the scholarships in Colorado with the 32 receiving $300 and two getting $500 scholarships. Florence Nelson of Haxtun is a substantial contributor to the scholarship fund, and she noted that she taught Mitch's father, Leland, when he was a first grader at Silverbeam School. Miller plans to attend the University of Southern Colorado and will probably study ag production. He is the son of Leland and Marilyn Miller of Paoli.

Steven Sharpe of Haxtun is among 465 University of Denver students named to the dean's list for the academic work completed during the 1980 winter quarter.

Fleming News - Mrs. Chas W. T. (Gerty) Atkinson was honored May 1 for her birthday anniversary when Mrs. Gerald Williamson and Mrs. Bud Kinzie gave luncheon and an afternoon of bridge for the occasion. The honoree was presented with an African violet.

Mrs. Henry Hulse is working in the school office as of Wednesday, as secretary to the superintendent, she has been at the bank.

Mrs. Floy Schamberger returned home Wednesday from her trip to see Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schamberger at Buffalo, N.Y. She accompanied them on a trip to Washington D. C. and Charleston, South Carolina. She was gone three weeks.

Janae Dermer, great-granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Plank Sr., was the honored guest at a dinner party on Saturday, April 12 for her second birthday. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Dermer.

The Fleming Future Farmers held their annual banquet. Steaks were cooked by Dorvin Schepler and Delbert Sonnenberg. Dinner was served in the cafeteria.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Brekel have returned home from Las Vegas where they went to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. They went to Denver for a visit with her mother and left there Sunday returning home on Wednesday.

Clarksville and Wages News - Everett Hunt of Minneapolis, Kan. and Leona Hunt were Monday evening guest of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Salvador.

Joyce and Lisa Lundgren called on Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hofmeister and children on Sunday and met Joleen.

Haxtun fifth graders react with varied expressions to Larry Helberg's "Rattlesnake," at the Haxtun Community Center on Wednesday, April 26. Fourth and fifth grades from Holyoke were also present for the occasion. Rattlesnake, a chewing, spitting mountain man, told tall tales about his exploits in America's early days. His tale was also a history lesson as his fiction was interwoven with facts about colonial America, beaver trapping and conversation.

First place in the league, JJB, winners of the Wednesday morning bowling league Joyce Burton, Jonetta Anderson and Barb Wernsman. Additional bowling awards winners are Helene Yost, Adele McConnell and Irma Johnson.

Haxtun Town Council members Darrel Phillips, Carolee Cloud and Laverne Starkebaum were sworn into office on Monday, May 3 by Haxtun Clerk Karie Wilson. Cloud and Starkebaum ran in the April election for second terms and Phillips won a seat as a write-in candidate.
