The Haxtun Harvest

Contracts of construction of Phillips County's new courthouse building were awarded by the board of county commissioners last Friday afternoon. The general contract was awarded to Knutzen and Son of Kearney, Nebraska at $61,300. A contract for heating, plumbing, electrical, and lighting equipment went to George Zeiler of Holyoke for approximately $11,500. This figure does not include architect's plans and equipment for the new building will be supervised by the county commissioners.

Maurtiz Larson of Denver arrived in Haxtun last week to visit relatives and friends and to take charge of the brickwork on the new McCulloch building.

South County News - Mrs. Jean Hackett is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Elvan Fix, this week.

Dailey News - Mr. and Mrs. Luther Cochran and baby left Friday for Arcadia to pick berries. LaNear Frank took them to that place. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wheeler and Arthur also went to work in the berry fields.

Steps were poured Tuesday in front of the Haxtun Post Office in an effort to make the climb from the street to the sidewalk easier. Funding for the steps came from the Sire-coordinated Fourth of July carnival last summer. The Fourth of July carnival which annually raises fund for community projects, is again being planned for this year.

Preparing to glue to sections of pipe together Evan, employee of Ensminger Construction. He is part of the crew installing an underground sprinkler system at the Haxtun park. The sprinkler system will allow the town to automatically water the park at night.

Paoli News - Brian and Donna and Brian Smith went to Colorado Springs over the weekend where they attended a rodeo. Brian Kroeger participated in the bull riding contest.

Rockland News - Don and Ida Mae Wisdom and Clara Wisdom enjoyed a dinner at the Ramada Inn on Father's Day and enjoyed a ride at North Sterling reservoir. Don and Ida Mae visited Bob and Mary Wright in the evening.

Glen Gibbs spent the Father's Day weekend with his parents, Everett and Minnie on Sunday, they enjoyed dinner at the El Elegre in Ovid and visited at the Jumbo in the afternoon.

Clarkville and Wages News - Mr. and Mrs. Harry Salvador, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Salvador and children, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Gibbs and boys, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Holcomb and boys and Maude Reynolds gathered at the park Sunday evening for a picnic-party to celebrate the spring birthdays and the thirty-first anniversary of Harry and Mary. Due to the wind they finished to celebration at Mrs. Reynolds' home.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Brownell attended the Prairie School Alumni Banquet Saturday after attending the Wiebers-Carper wedding in Haxtun. Brownell graduated with the Class of 1930 from that high school. He was a special guest.

Another financial crisis at Haxtun Hospital caused tempers to flare at a Haxtun Hospital District board meeting on June 21. Jim Brundige, hospital administrator, told the board that Medicare reimbursements had been suspended, due to a computer glitch, until $49,000 in reimbursements that the hospital received was repaid. Sixty percent of the income comes from Medicare reimbursements.

Noelle Wernsman, daughter of Tom and Kathy Wernsman, Haxtun, tees off during a golf lesson at F & H Golf Course, June 26. Wernsman, Joseph and Frances Patterson, son and daughter of Dean and Bonnie Patterson, and Benjamin Cox, son of Kenneth and Melinda Cox, all of Haxtun, and Kylee Gordon and Jerica Kroeger, daughters of Tom and Sheri Bornhoft, Fleming, are participants in the junior golf program at F & H. The program has been running for the last five weeks on Monday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. C.J. Kain, Haxtun, Alan Coffin, Haxtun and Bonnie Brownell, Fleming, share the instruction duties.

Heather Ann Skold, daughter of Wayne and Alice Skold, Haxtun, has been named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill. Skold's primary study emphasis is music.

The Haxtun Town Council voted to approve an ordinance that will ban the retail sale, distribution, cultivation and dispensing of medical marijuana in Haxtun. The council voted on the emergency ordinance during a special meeting on June 21.

Phillips County Fair Queen Sarah Heerman crowns Janna Smith as the 2010 Lady-in-waiting at Dandelion Daze in Holyoke on June 18.

Samantha Mayhew, a 2008 graduate of Haxtun High School, was recently named to the Dean's List at Colorado State University for the spring semester with a 4.0 grade point average. She is majoring in anthropology. Samantha is the daughter of Jason and Tanya Mayhew, Haxtun.

Jesson Salyards, a 2006 graduate of Haxtun High School, was named to the Vice President's Honor Roll at the University of Wyoming. Jesson is the son of Dennis and Arlene Salyards, Haxtun.
