The Haxtun Harvest

New Haven - Yards and pastures are beautiful with patches here and there of the wild red geranium. The flower has never been seen before in such abundance.

Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Brooks and children, Mildred Brooks and Grace Bevard, drove to Byers last Thursday for a short visit. Mrs. Brooks and children will remain in that city for a few days. Miss Nadine Bevard accompanied the party to Haxtun for a visit.

Bryant - The funeral services for the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wernsman were held at the family home Thursday afternoon. Interment was made in the Holyoke cemetery.

Fairfield - Mr. and Mrs. Ray Briggs of Denver visited Saturday and Sunday at the parental Henry Anderson home. Sigfrid Anderson returned to Denver with them to receive medical attention.

The Harvest is in receipt of a message from the Rev. I.C. Snavely and family, formerly of Haxtun, who are now visiting at Enders, Nebr. "Dear Friends at Haxtun: We have been in this vicinity for two and half weeks. Washouts, and no highways or railroad for most of the time since we have been here. We are busy visiting relatives, and between visiting, working, fishing and swimming, we are, with plenty of eats, managing to exist. The wheat crop is the best ever in this locality. Some of the wheat comes to my shoulder.

Foundation pads of concrete have been poured behind the grandstands at the Haxtun football field and the stands will be moved back away from the track shortly. A new concession stand will be built at the field and other improvements made this summer.


The annual Haxtun Fourth of July carnival, organized to raise funds for community projects, will again be conducted this year with activities to get underway Friday at 2 p.m. at Haxtun Park. At least 10 area clubs are participating in the event which will be climaxed by fireworks.

A bridesmaid luncheon for the bridesmaids of Cyndi Pyle, Bride-elect of Robert Vandenbark was held recently at the home of Vivian Warren. Those attending were the guests, Cyndi Pyle, Dorothy Williams, Julie Brownell, Jodi Lambert, Jodi Pyle, Karen Wilson, Virginia Vandenbark, Anna Mae Pyle and the hostess Vivian Warren. After the lovely luncheon, gifts were presented to the bridesmaids and maid of honor.


Members of the Herrick's from Fleming which won the Holyoke Invitational Fast Pitch Softball Tournament were, Elmer Herrick, Tammy Yockey, Sharon Dreier, Gina Kirkwood, Tina Lousberg, Karen Rigel, Jodi Pyle, Kathy Dreier, Becky Dreier, Sandy Ham, Jodi Lambert, Kim Herrick and Kendra Morison, coached by Ron Dreier.

Paoli News - Last weekend Fred Kain and Mark Kain went to Sutherland where they met Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gartner of Grant, Nebr., Mrs. Marge Gartner of Grant, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Morgan and son of Hershey, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gartner and son of Crawford, Nebr., for fishing and camping.

Fairfield News - Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bjorklun were the honored guests at a club in dinner at the Community Center in Haxtun Sunday noon.

Bernard Franson visited with his daughter Mrs. Harold Hadeen, Harold, Mary and Steven last week while his wife was at a church convention.


Rockland News - Roy and Mildred Wisdom attended the luncheon and show at the Sterling Elks Club Friday noon. Miss Colorado contestants were guests. The show directed and produced by Doug Werner was emceed by Michelle Caneva. Michelle and her sister RoKaye had part in the Miss Colorado Sisters. They are the daughters of Ray and Sadie Caneva and nieces of Ro and Mildred.

Leon Fetzer celebrated his birthday June 24, those enjoying cake and ice cream with him in the evening were Darrell and Rosetta and Zane and Max.

Fleming News - Lori Bornhoft was honored Thursday night in the home of Kathleen Bornhoft that occasion being a "make up" to Lori for having had to miss her eighth-grade graduation. Lori was in Denver hospital with back surgery at the time of her graduation.


Paula Massarotti, bride-elect of Mike Etl, was honored with a bridal shower in St. Peters' Hall Sunday afternoon. The hostesses included Denise Etl and Tammy Jody Etl, Ann Etl, Bette Wernsman, Rita Etl, Agnes Burton and Debbie Miles.

Walter West was married in Denver Sunday to Anita Louise Lucero. His relatives and close friends attended the wedding and reception.

Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Wilcox have moved to Fleming from Sterling. They have purchased the Leon Beck house. Mr. Wilcox is employed by the Soil Conservation Service.

Smoke billows above a Haxtun volunteer fireman as he attempts to put out a fire in a load of hay on a semi owned by trucking firm out of Oshkosh, Neb. The Haxtun Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene four miles north and four east of Haxtun on Highway 59. According to Rob Urbach, Haxtun Chief of Police, the fire was still smoldering at noon as HVFD stood by.


Making fossils holds the attention of the kindergarten through third grade crowd. Kathy Wernsman demonstrates how to add tiny footprints into a piece of clay to simulate fossil bug prints. Pottery sessions were held on Thursday, June 29, as part of the town's summer art program.

The Haxtun-Fleming Herald

Tina Fetzer presented Haxtun Bullpup Preschool, Paige Thompson and Becky Heinz, with a plaque recognizing the preschool's three-star rating on Wednesday, June 30.

Natasha Helfer was named one of four squad leaders during her time at the Colorado State Patrol Youth Academy in Golden. Natasha received a football autographed by the Denver Broncos.

On Monday, June 28, the Haxtun FFA officers participated in an officer retreat. The 2010-2011 officer team is: President, Tessa Brammer; Vice president, Natashia Barker; Secretary, Janna Smith; Treasurer, Nick Newman; Reporter, Kimber Hadeen; Sentinel, Blake Mari; and Executive Committee members Natasha Helfer and Brandt Davis.

Erin Starkebaum was recently named to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Dean's Honor Roll list for the second semester of college. Starkebaum is majoring in journalism and mass communications.
