Haxtun Harvest

Fairfield News - Mr. and Mrs. Becker of Wisconsin arrived here Wednesday for a visit with their daughter, Mrs. Fondell, and family. Pastor and Mrs. E. E. Fondell, Mr. and Mrs. Becker, Mrs. Plumley of New York, and Bill Becker left Monday for a two-week vacation in the mountains.

Turning out of the road to avoid hitting a horse, the Rev. and Mrs. Harold Lorimer suffered minor injuries early last Friday morning when their car plunged into a ditch on the Sedgwick road, 20 miles northeast of Haxtun. Mrs. Lorimer experienced a severed artery in her right wrist, caused by broken glass. Her husband received slight cuts about the arms. Mr. Lorimer served as student pastor at the Elim Lutheran Church in Haxtun a few years ago.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Theodore Sharpe, 29, who passed away last Thursday. She was born Alice Carver at Elbert. She was the mother of three children, 10, 9, and 5. She had been an ideal wife and mother, living a quiet, unimposing, unselfish but cheerful life, ministering to her husband and children in a noble expression of womanhood.

Alice Bamford, of the Haxtun Commercial Club Auxiliary, presents several children's kits to Shirley Salyards, Head of Nursing at Haxtun Hospital. Each kit contains a hand puppet sewn by Gladys Young and a coloring book and will be given to each child hospitalized in Haxtun.

Shelly Ride, the 18-year-old-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Norman of Clovis New Mexico and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Ride of Fleming, will reign as Curry County 4-H Queen for 1980. Miss Ride is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fetzer and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ride of Fleming. Shelly is a former Fleming area resident.

Clarkville and Wages News - A couple of gals in the neighborhood took their first combine ride this week. Margaret Hill rode with D. E. Neiman Thursday afternoon and Rev. Kathie Wilson went with Bill Schmidt also on Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Schmidt hosted a birthday supper for Todd on Sunday night. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Terry Schmidt of Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Schmidt and Kirk of Julesburg, Kevin Brandt of Holyoke, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Schmidt and family, Mabel Schmidt and Tammy Schmidt.

Rockland News - Raymond Gibbs has received an honor of Staff Sergeant, he is serving in the Air Force. Raymond expects to be home on a leave the first of August, but thought that was too long to wait so told of his new rank early.

Howard and Barbara Fix, Randy and Trever went to Sterling Sunday evening and enjoyed the evening with Glen and Irene Hendon, Howard and Julie Fix, Chad and Lynn Fix. It was in honor of Howard and Barbara's wedding anniversary and Howard Jr.'s birthday.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. Larry Barkley and family and Kelly Carwin went to Fort Collins Sunday and were overnight guests of her mother, Mrs. Collins. On Sunday the Barkley's took Wendy and Kelly on to Camp Buckhorn for the week. Rev. Bill Moore is director of his camp.

Gina Kirkwood is home after having attended the United States Olympic Training Camp July 13-19 in Colorado Springs.

Haxtun's Old Fashioned Saturday Night set the scene for music, cars, crusin' and fun this past Saturday on Haxtun's main street. According to Becky Mull, chairperson for the event, there were 48 cars and motorcycles on show throughout the day.

Remodeling of three suites of rooms at the Inn were completed two weeks ago according to Fred Borra, Inn owner. Renovation of the final four suites is scheduled for spring of 2001.

On Tuesday morning June 27, members of the Haxtun Community Auxiliary celebrated Haxtun Police Department's move last December to new offices on Fletcher Street. The Auxiliary served coffee and sweet rolls to Colorado State Patrolman Ken Pierce and Haxtun Police Chief as a belated welcome to their new offices.

The Fleming Saddle Club 2000 season horse show finals were held at the Fleming arena Sunday, July 23. Sue Sweet, president of the club, reported the championship and reserve championship prizes for: Pee Wee Class Champion belt buckle, Dana Schreibvogel, Keenesburg; reserve tack bag, Kendra Timm, Haxtun. Junior Class: Champion belt buckle, Justin Fehringer, Peetz; reserve saddle bags, Vanessa Timm, Haxtun. Senior Class: Champion belt buckle, Melinda Groshans, Haxtun; reserve saddle cover, Jimie Ridnour, Crook.

Josh Turney, Haxtun, graduated from Level Three of the Future Astronaut Training Program on July 10 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. Joshua will be a junior at Haxtun High School this fall. He is the son of Kim and Dan Turney and grandson of Tom and Theresa Davis all of Haxtun.

The Hadeen family recently returned home from a 12-day vacation and sightseeing trip in Alaska. The trip was a celebration of Rex and Maxine Hadeen's 60th Wedding Anniversary.

On July 10 Haxtun's FFA Chapter members attended an annual lake trip to Lake Enders in Nebraska. Quite a few members attended this year's event. The FFA members were able to swim, tube and spend time with fellow members. This year's trip to the lake featured three boats for the members to use for lake activities.

Fleming Little League team members are Camden Goss, Christopher Goss, Cameron Henry, Jaxon King, Anthony Lousberg, Keegan Mann, Korbyn Mann, Blake Meridith, Kayln Serrato, Levi Muller, Matthew Tanner, Alex Vandenbark, Darian Wilkening and Luke Muller. They are coached by Anthony Serrato and Randy Meredith.
