The Haxtun Harvest

One of the prettiest weddings of the season was solemnized Thursday afternoon at three o'clock in the Methodist Church at Haxtun when Miss Hazel Miller became the bride of Mr. Harold Gall of Eustis, Nebr. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Alexander Bryans. Little Betty Lou Gipple, as ring bearer, was dressed in a pink taffeta dress and carried the ring on a white satin pillow.

A bottle of deadly acid, drunk with the innocence and curiosity that is a natural trait of a youngster, caused the death of Jack Hayes, age 6, last Thursday. With a number of other children in Paoli, Jack went to the back room of a cream station Tuesday and found a number of discarded bottles. Discovering one containing a liquid, one of his companions said, "Drink it, Jack." The bottle contained sulfuric acid. Used in testing cream. His mother having died at the time of Jack's birth, he had lived with relatives during the greater part of his life-time. During the last year he had made his home with his aunt, Mrs. Earle Nelson in Paoli.

Three young students Paige Fuesz, Michael Davis, and Erin Hovel who attend the Busy Hands Preschool in Haxtun find books a little more interesting while seated on the new carpeting laid in the preschool building. The new carpet was purchased through donations from Haxtun Jaycee-ettes, Lions Club and Haxtun Commercial Club.

Haxtun Cheerleaders have just returned from the Camp of Champions conducted in Fort Collins where they learned several new chants and cheers. Cheerleaders for the 1980-81 school year are Laurie Spelts, Dona Scott, Linda Orth, Rita Potter, and Marcie Olson.

Mr. and Mrs. Chas Meakins will observe their 60th wedding anniversary, Sunday, August 31. They were married on August 7, 1920. They have lived in Haxtun area all their lives.

Susie Riesel, bride-elect of Scott Wiebers, of Boulder and Jan Deinkel bride-elect of Ron Wiebers, of Denver were honored with a double shower Sunday in the parlors of the Fleming United Methodist Church. Hostesses were included Karen Etle, Marie Rice, Arlene Loos, Doris Bell, Shirlee Herder and two who were unable to attend, Philomene Dis and Happy Piel.

Rockland News - An open house miscellaneous bridal shower is planned for Saturday evening August 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rockland Church for Dalphone Gibbs, bride-elect to Sy Sampson, an August 30 wedding is planned.

Charles Wilterdink attended the Logan County fair Saturday and enjoyed lunch with Erwin, Clara, Dale, Carol and Linda from the Burger King.

Paoli News - Mrs. Leland Miller and boys are in Colorado Springs this week where the boys are participating in the National Finals of the Little Britches rodeo.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee McConnell were in Denver for a few days last week. Their children visited with Mr. and Mrs. Everett McConnell while they were gone.

Clarkville and Wages News - Those attending the Bryan Community picnic at the Louis Brazelton home on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Ron Ruberg, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Turner and Nancy Hanson of Yuma, Shelly and Shawn Brown and Hale Pole of Sterling and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Salvador. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Hinde of Haxtun called in the evening.

A sign which was put into place this past Wednesday, Aug. 16, is a memorial to Pat Meakins late husband, Richard Meakins, a 1960 Haxtun High School graduate. It replaces a wooden sign that listed weekly schedules for HHS sports. The sign was designed and made by Merv Eckman, Fort Collins, who also graduated from HHS in 1960. Eckman also made the original Bulldog sign at the school.

John Heermann, 11, son of Lauren and Jodie Heermann, Haxtun, was recently selected to play on the Sterling All-Star team in the Cal Ripken division of the Babe Ruth Baseball organization. The team traveled to Fountain in mid-July where they defeated their opponents in the regional championship and advanced to state tournament play.

The local winners of the Aug. 13 drag races at the Julesburg Drag Strip are as follows: Mike Ensminger took first place in his 1999 Acura; Travis Allen took first place in the street/trophy division in his1975 Nova; and Becky Mull came in as a semi-finalist in the super pro division in her Dragster.

Adults and children from Haxtun's Prairie Home Baptist Church applied a little elbow water toward raising money to purchase a new collapsible puppet stage for the church's puppet ministry. Elbow and water were available for any vehicle willing to take time for a wash on Saturday, Aug. 19. The car wash was accompanied by a bake sale ad it all took place in the Haxtun Super's parking lot.

The Colorado Department of Corrections confirmed at 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22, that an inmate escaped at the Sterling Correctional Facility in Sterling. The Department of Corrections is working with the State and local law enforcement to apprehend the escapee.

A collision on County Road 2 at the Phillips/Yuma County line resulted in injuries to Reverend Dave Loeschke, Pastor of Haxtun's Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Loeschke was taken by Yuma County Ambulance to Haxtun Hospital and later transferred to the Medical Center of the Rockies at Loveland. According to sources, Rev. Loeschke was treated for broken ribs and head trauma, but was released and headed home on Monday.

First place winner of the Phillips County Baby Bear Hugs Sweetest Baby - Toddler contest Aria Ann Brunick; second place winner Claire Hubbard; and third place winner Bryson David Burnett. Aria is the daughter of Lisa and Bryan Brian Brueggeman and the late Christopher Brunick, Claire is the daughter of Gabe and Jill Hubbard; and Bryson is the son of Bryan and Mallori Brunett.

The Colorado Bombers won the 2010 Nebraska Baseball Class B State Championship. They defeated Chardon 8-2 to win the champion game Sunday at Sidney, Neb. Those playing are Caleb Contreras, Haxtun; Austin Tharp, Holyoke; Kendall Kroeger, Chris Urbach, Grant Edwards, all of Haxtun; Sean Fehringer, Fleming; Steven Ortner and Zach Kruger, Holyoke; Gage Roelle, Peetz; Gus Collins, Julesburg; Brady Sanchez, Sedgwick and Keith Pocock, Ovid.
