Fleming voters to see municipal and school issues on ballots

September 23, 2020

Fleming voters will be tasked with a number of decisions when it comes time to vote this November. Both the Town of Fleming and the Frenchman School District have questions for voters on the ballot in the upcoming election.

The Frenchman Board of Education ballot question is asking voters who live within the school district boundary to approve the collection of additional mills on property taxes. The District is asking to continue collecting up to two mills annually for seven years.

In 2000, the local school district successfully passed a bond issue to replace the roof on the building. The bonds for the roof project will be fully paid in 2020. The District is asking voters to continue collecting that amount of taxes for seven more years.

A mill levy is the rate charged on assessed value to come up with the amount a person owes from property taxes. For one mill, $1 is charged per $1,000 of assessed value.

The two basic areas the additional funds would be used for are transportation and technology. Hopes are to replace old school buses and vehicles as well as purchase computers, digital devises and content to support academic programs and to increase and improve internet access.

If passed, the mill levy override would sunset in seven years. That means if the Frenchman School District wanted to continue using those funds it would again have to ask voters to continue the override.

In addition to the school district ballot measure, residents in the Town of Fleming will be asked to vote on two things: council member term limits and ordinance publications.

Town of Fleming referred ballot question 2I, on the mail in ballot this November, will ask residents if term limits should be eliminated so that present and future elected officials can serve an unlimited number of consecutive terms.

Town of Fleming referred ballot question 2J will ask if, in order to save on publication costs, the Town of Fleming should be permitted to publish ordinances by title only in newspapers rather than publishing ordinances in their entirety providing that the full ordinance be available to the public at the town hall.

The 2020 general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
