Those who have contributed wheat during the past 10 days for the Haxtun Memorial Hospital fund are H.L. Hofmeister, Harold Gall, Carl Eckman, L.C. Corning, Ray Phillips, South Side Grocery, and Glenn Jones of the Texaco Company. The choral robe fund of the Haxtun High School chorus continues to grow with recent donations from Rickard Roos, Mrs. George Jones Jr. and Merle Switzer. Mr. Funke, band leader and chorus director state that the order was sent in Wednesday and the robes should be here in time for the Christmas concert.

Funeral services for Mrs. Henry Westerman will be held Saturday from the Lutheran Church. She died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 1950, a Pueblo hospital.

Oct. 3, 1955

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert K. Meakins and sons moved into the Everett Davis residence in Dailey.

Maynard K. Yost, interior communications electrician fireman apprentice, U.S.N. was serving aboard the fleet-type submarine USS Besugo.

The Haxtun Telephone Company was granted a loan of $106,000 for the purchase of the Crook Telephone Company to serve 105 rural consumers there. A similar loan was granted to Mr. Reyher, owner of the system, for the installation of a dial system for Haxtun and the area.

Oct. 3, 1980

Dr. Robert Ridenour was Grand Marshal at the 59th annual Corn Festival. Dr. Ridenour began his medical practice in Haxtun on Sept. 9, 1950, so he was honored for his 30 years of service to the community.

The Fleming Methodist Church celebrated its 90th anniversary. Mentioned as sharing in the day's activities were: Reverend William Moore, Mrs. Donald Langdon and daughters, Earnest McPherron, Marilyn Carwin, Mrs. Marjorie Severin, Reverend and Mrs. Dennis Sillaman, L. W. Brownell, Lewis Rhodes, Dessie Monroe, Mrs. Lewis Haruf, and Reverend O.C. Domer of Denver who was minister in 1923-1928 was an honored guest and gave the benediction.

Christine Fetzer, 78, passed away in Holyoke. She was survived by two daughters, Phyllis Freemyer and Esther Mae Baca both of Haxtun.

Mrs. Doris Hart, 63, passed away in Haxtun. She was survived by her husband, Ellis, a daughter Dolores Pitt, and two sons, Philip and Lorin.

Homecoming royalty Staci Starkebaum and Cory Fuesz, attendants; Connie Howard and Dean Smith, attendants; and Melisa Lock and Chris Fuesz, queen and king.

Gilbert and Leah Anderson placed second in the father/daughter division in the three-legged race. Tommy Kugler won second in the 10-year-old division of the pedal power tractor pull. Audrey Starkebaum rode her tricycle in the kiddie parade in the rain.

A crowd of 3,500 to 4,000 people experienced the beautiful weather that came with the 79th annual Corn Festival held this past Saturday, Sept. 30. The large crowd cheered along the parade route as floats all descriptions portrayed their builder's creative vision of this year's theme, "Millennium Moon."

The Flagler Panthers came into Haxtun undefeated this past Friday night, Sept. 29. They left bloodied and beaten after meeting a beast of a defense put forth by the Fightin' Bulldogs. Haxtun's offense added beauty as it executed 47 points to end the night with a 47-8 victory. For added sweetness, it was Haxtun's homecoming and the bleachers were stacked high with fans.

About 60 citizens gathered in Holyoke on Sept. 26, to listen, and ask pointed questions, as local and State dignitaries explained the pros and cons of 15 initiatives that will be on the November ballot. Senator Marilyn Musgrave and State Representative Diane Hoppe took turns explaining the first six measures, which were referred to the ballot by the state legislature.

Haxtun Hospital District's quest for a Chief Executive Officer came to an end last week. After almost five months of searching, HHD signed an employee contract with Don Burris.

The Haxtun Childcare Center will be equipped with new cribs, changing tables, swings and other equipment purchased with funds from a $50,000 United States Department of Agriculture grant recently presented to the Haxtun Childcare Coalition. The Coalition has been working the for the past two years to raise funds to build the Haxtun Childcare Center, which will care for 10 infants, 10 toddlers and 28 preschool-aged children. The Coalition also recently received a $300,00 grant from the Department of Local Affairs.

The Fleming Wildcats took their second road win of the season over the Prairie Mustangs on Friday, Oct. 1. The win put the Wildcats at 5-0 on the season. Andrew Lightsey led Fleming in scoring with 20 points. He made seven of eight point-after attempts and one touchdown.
