Recent action on the part of state highway officials is considered a favorable move toward the completion of the No. 6 highway project from Paoli to Holyoke. Although $104,000 was appropriated from the highway budget for the purpose of finishing the construction, the funds have not as yet been made available. The Phillips County highway project, to be carried out through the work-relief program, calls for the employment of 150 men.

Deciding to quit farming in this community, Fred Koch will dispose of his equipment at public auction on Monday, Oct. 14, at the farm five miles south and one and a half miles west of Haxtun. Included in the property are three head of work horses, six head of cattle, considerable corn and other feed, and a full line of farm machinery.

Oct. 11, 1950

Funeral Services were held Saturday afternoon, Oct. 7, for Mrs. Hannah Edna Westerman, 42, who passed away Tuesday Oct. 3 at the State hospital in Pueblo, following an illness of four years.

Fairfield News - Mrs. Laura Lindgren and daughter moved to Holyoke this week to make their home. The youngest daughter has been attending schools there this term and the oldest daughter is a student at Colorado State College of Education in Greeley. We regret losing this family from our community.

Oct. 9, 1975

Mary Lou Reynolds has joined the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Service and is an area extension agent in home management, working out of the Yuma County office. She joins the staff of 12 other Extension professionals serving the Golden Plains area with local offices in Holyoke, Burlington, Akron and Wray.

Enjoying a picnic dinner and Sunday in the mountains were Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Coyne, Karen Burton, Mr. And Mrs. Mike Hardy, all of Loveland; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Fuller and daughter of Littleton; Mr. and Mrs. Walt Heinitz and family and Mrs. Celia Coyne, all of Holyoke; and Mrs. Wallace Burton of Haxtun.

Area youngsters took advantage of Monday's snowfall to build snowmen around town. Pictured, Kendra and Carissa Hagemeier show off their artwork, a replica of the girls' grandfather, Kerm Scheel. Their parents are Vera and Roger Hagemeier, Sterling.

Pictured: Beth Wernsman bumps one in volleyball action during a Lady Bulldog varsity game against Stratton on Friday night. In what proved a high-intensity match, Haxtun won two games, 15-11 and 16-14. Earlier in the week Haxtun volleyball team beat Wray at home.

Larry Orth finally did break his habit of going to school after 30 years. He retired from his job as head of maintenance at Haxtun Schools this past August.

He still hasn't broken his habit of walking the sidelines at football games keeping stats. It's something he's been doing even longer than he's been going to his job at the school. Try 37 years.

Eighth grade students at Haxtun Elementary surpassed the performance of students statewide on the Colorado Student Assessment Program Assessments in science. The state average was 45 percent at or above proficient, and Haxtun students had 56 percent at or above proficient.

Lance Corporal Scott Hadeen, a 1999 Haxtun High School graduate, was recently selected to play on the 15-member Marine Basketball team at his current base in Okinawa, Japan. He was one of 40 men who tried out for the team, and at 5 feet 11 inches, is the shortest man to make the final cut.

Phillips County 4-H members celebrated "100 years of 4-H" during the annual achievement program on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the PC Event Center in Holyoke. Members also celebrated 4-H's 100th birthday during national 4-H Week, Oct. 3-10.

With just three games left in the regular season, the Fleming Lady Wildcats have only one loss on their record. The team went two for two this week on back-to-back nights defeating Weldon Valley and Peetz on the road putting them at 15-1.
