85 Years Ago

Dec. 11, 1935

A branch store of the Boyd Hardware Co. was opening in Fleming this week, with Homer Collins of Haxtun in charge. Fleming has been without a general hardware store for several years.

Going into the home stretch in The Haxtun Harvest $2,000-prize subscription campaign, Mrs. A.R. Haskins, one of the live-wire contestants competing for first grand prize and high honors, takes the lead. Following closely on the heels of Mrs. Haskins is Mrs. Carl Lundgren.

A business deal was completed the latter part of the week in which Kenneth Burt disposed of his interest in the Powerline Service station to Maurice J. Smith, who took charge of the business immediately. Walter Davis will continue as an employee of the station.

Finance purchase of milk cows at cheese factory: Suitable cows may be purchased by farmers at an interest rate of seven percent, payable monthly over a period of two years. C.H. Barker of the B & B Cheese factory said that he expected to complete deals for purchasing 100 cows next week.


H.B. Prouty has been invoicing the Foster Lumber Company's yard at Wiggins this week.

Dec. 13, 1950

Rex Hadeen, who left this week for training in the United States Army, was the honored guest last Tuesday evening at a surprise party held in the home of his parents. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hadeen and son, Miss Maxine Grauberger of Sterling, Miss Frances Bjorklun, Nina and Janice Freemyer, Scharlene Legg, Barbara and Helen Fryrear, JoAnn Adamson and Messrs. Daniel Bjorklun, Glen and John Legg, Lester Weers, Elmer Shafer, and Jerry and Frank Freemyer.


Deaths: William E. Hanson, 57, prominent farmer of Yuma County, south of Haxtun, died at four o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 12, at the farm home following a heart attack. The sudden death of Fred C. Schnieder at six o'clock Sunday morning, Dec. 10, following a heart attack brought grief to his family and his large circle of friends in this community. His death followed the passing of his wife less than two months ago while he was away from home on a trip to the mountains. He was 61.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph K. Scott are the parents of a son born Sunday morning at the Haxtun Memorial hospital. He has been named Craig Munroe.

Dec. 11, 1975

Deaths: Ed Hajek, 84, with funeral services Dec. 10, 1975; Leona Margaret Dix, 88, Dec. 8, 1975; Carl Edwin Franson, no age or birth date listed, services Dec. 9, 1975.


Vernon Myers was named champion of the snooker tournament during championship play Monday night at the Haxtun recreation parlor. Second-place winner was Howard McConnell, third place was Lester Lambert, and fourth place was Ray Pillard. Pitch winners this week were Roscoe Peterson and Ray Pillard, first; Pat Kain and Ed Ulmer, second; and Lester Lambert and Roy Wisdom, third.

Officers who will be leading the Women's Missionary Council for the Church of the Brethren for the 1976 year are Mrs. Booher, Elsie Fischer, Lena Harms, Sue Berg, and Fern Hinde.

Haxtun United Methodist Women held their annual Christmas luncheon Friday in the church basement. Those participating in a skit were Mrs. Clara Swisher, Mrs. Augie Bjorklun, Mrs. Harold Harms, Mrs. Reon Burton, Mrs. Marvin Switzer, and Mrs. Larry Starkebaum. The skit was directed by Mrs. Winston Ham and Mrs. Switzer.


Preparation has begun for the construction planned to add 585,000 bushels' storage to the Haxtun Co-op Elevator's present storage capacity. Constructors are aiming at a July 1, 1976, completion date.

Dec. 13, 1990

Myrtle Meakins, a resident at Haxtun Nursing Home, celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.

Obituaries: Vechel "Swede" Wilbur Olson Sr., 72, Dec. 6, 1990 at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyo .; Bart J. Scott, 87, Dec. 3, 1990, in Prescott, Ariz., at a V.A. facility; Lieutenant Troy Moore, Beeville, Texas, Dec. 10, 1990, grandson of Esther Yost Clark.


Deb Kugler, former managing editor at The Haxtun Herald, recently opened Kugler Printing at her home on West Fletcher in Haxtun.

Braving heights she admits to being afraid of, Caroline Newth, Director of Nurses at Haxtun Hospital, strings lights on a tree hospital personnel hope will become traditionally lit each Christmas with lights dedicated to the memory of loved ones. Thus far 106 lights have been purchased by area residents.

Debben, a golden retriever being trained as a guide dog by Lyanne Haynes, a Holyoke fourth grader, visited the local nursing home to learn social habits.

Saturday, Dec. 11 marked the annual Fleming Festival of Lights. The annual event brought in many vendors, shoppers and hungry community members for the ever-popular chili contest sponsored by The Haxtun-Fleming Herald. Twenty-two entries of red and green chili made it to the contest this year. Winners include: red, Pauline Pray, first, and Tracy Oberle, second; green, Clay Gorman, first, and Diana Craven, second. The People's Choice award went to Dave Munday.

The Haxtun Bulldogs accomplished something that only three other teams have in the past 78 games - hand the Caliche Buffaloes a loss. The Bulldogs beat the Buffaloes on Thursday, Dec. 9 for the first time since 2006.
