Jan. 8, 1936

Harvest subscription campaign brought to a sensational close Saturday night: Mrs. A. R. Haskins and Mrs. Ella Sharpe win new Chevrolet cars. Checks amounting to 10 percent of money collected on subscriptions have been made out to other contestants. A large crowd visited The Harvest office Saturday night to witness the closing of the contest.

Murl Jones of Omaha is the victim of gas Tuesday: Mr. and Mrs. George Jones Sr. received the shocking news Tuesday of the accidental death of their son Murl, which occurred at Omaha, Nebr., about noon that day. Mr. Jones was 46 years of age. At the time of his death, he was a conductor of the Union Pacific railroad and had been employed by that system for 15 years. He is survived by his wife and one son, Junior, nine years of age. Press dispatches stated that a railroad conductor had died when he was overcome by fumes from a heater, after being exposed to the intense cold. Although the name was not given, it was thought possible that the press notice may have had reference to the death of Mr. Jones.

Jan. 10, 1951

The Trinity Methodist Church at Paoli was the scene of a beautiful afternoon wedding Sunday, Jan. 7, when Miss Bonnie Jean Corning and Orville Lee Harms were united in marriage. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester C. Corning. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Harms. Rev. V.D. Morrison, pastor of the church, officiated.

The marriage of Miss Wilma Hill of Haxtun and Lawrence Rogers of Yuma was solemnized Sunday, Dec. 31, in a quiet but impressive ceremony at the Church of Christ parsonage in Holyoke. Rev. Moore officiated.

Stepping up farm production as a part of the overall defense effort is going to test the ability of the country's acres to produce, says Glen I. Lewis, chairman of the Phillips County PMA committee. The first problem will be to produce enough of what is needed without too much of some commodities and not enough of others. Then there is the problem of producing what is needed without diminishing the productivity of the land.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sparks returned to their home last Tuesday after spending the holidays with their daughter and family, Lieut. Colonel and Mrs. Charles W.T. Atkinson and son in Washington, D.C.

Robert P. Connell Jr. is Haxtun's new city patrolman. He joined the existing patrolmen on active duty six weeks ago. The department is presently working on a regular rotating schedule to provide the town of Haxtun with 24-hour police service.

The first subscription drive of the Haxtun Herald ended Jan. 1, short of the secondary goal of 1,500 subscriptions that would have enabled the Herald to send the paper to its subscribers for three years for $5. The total number of paid subscriptions received by that date was 1,410. The number does insure subscribers that they will receive their paper for two years for the price of a one-year subscription.

Lourdes Patricia Lopez, whose home is in Managua, Nicaragua, is currently at home with the Curtis and Audrey Burton family in Fleming. Her visit was arranged through international Fellowship in Buffalo, N.Y.

Several local persons were in Cawker City and Downs, Kan., recently to attend the wedding of Wilma Skold and Gary Ozias. Attending from the area were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Skold, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kobayashi, Ky, Todd and Dayton of Ovid, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Jeffers, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Johnson of Julesburg, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Ricker, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Michael, Cheryl Anderson, Wayne and Lowell Skold, Dr. and Mrs. Melvin Skold and Paul, Karl and Eric of Fort Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Skold, Elizabeth and Laurie of Liberty, Mo., Mrs. Gladys Bjorklun, and Dr. and Mrs. Bernard Skold of Ames, Iowa.

Emery Anderson ends 18-year career in extension service. The last 16 years of his career were spent in Phillips County. Anderson, along with retiring county treasurer Lois Lipker and out-going county commissioner Larry Poos, were honored at a reception held this past Friday at the Phillips County Fairgrounds.

The Colorado Pains Rural Health Network has been awarded $433,393 for a three-year period by the Colorado Trust, according to Paul Schmidt, Administrator at Haxtun Hospital, a member of the rural hospital consortium.

Obituaries: Ellen A. Burton, 91, formerly of Haxtun, died Monday, Dec. 17, 1990 at Thornton; Margie Louise Mortensen, 61, formerly of Holyoke, died Dec. 26, 1990 at Fort Collins.

Chris Romine has been selected artist of the month for December at Haxtun School. His winning project is a combination of weaving and pastels. Romine, who is in his fourth year of art, is the son of Glen and Nancy Romine.

The families of Henry and Inez Dee wish them a happy 50th wedding anniversary and invite their friends to express their congratulations with a card shower. Rob and Nancy, Barry and Heather, Pam and Beryl.

The Phillips County Commissioners agreed to modify an existing intergovernmental agreement with the Haxtun and Holyoke ambulance services to increase the amount of money the County contributes to the purchase of new ambulances. According to Randy Schafer, County Administrator, the cost of purchasing ambulances is increasing and the County previously contributed $7,000 towards the purchase of a new ambulance and each ambulance service contributed $3,000. After modifying the agreement, each ambulance service will now pay $4,000 towards a new ambulance and the County will add $8,000.

The Haxtun Bulldogs suffered their fourth loss of the season on Friday to Wray. The game was the first for the Bulldogs since taking a break over Christmas vacation.

The Fleming Wildcats went 1-1 over the past weekend following a three-week Christmas vacation. Fleming met up with the Pawnee Coyotes and the Sedgwick County Cougars on their home court to open the 2011 portion of the season.
