Increased interest in library activities was reported at the January meeting of Haxtun Public Library board. In spite of the lack of funds, books costing $50 were purchased during December by the board. It is planned to add a new book to the library each week until such time as it is possible to purchase a larger shipment.

Miss Sue Todd of Crook will open a beauty shop at the Shirley Hotel building this week, in the room formerly occupied by Becker's Radio shop. She operated a shop in Greeley for some length of time. The Becker Radio shop was moved Tuesday into the adjoining room in the hotel building, in which the Shirley Grill was formerly located. The new location allows additional space for the shop, affording a better display for radios, refrigerators and washing machines.

Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Taylor and J.S. Ruff left Haxtun Sunday morning for a month's vacation in the southern states.


Fairfield News - Miss Lillian Cronquist is employed at the Lydin home, helping care for Mrs. Lydin, who has been poorly during the past month.

New Have News - Iliff won the basketball game from our boys Friday evening on the New Haven floor.

South Country News - Tracy Hardy, W.R. Allen, Pete Erickson and Harry Long helped Harry Thompson shell corn Monday and Tuesday.

Jan. 17, 1951

Beef calves shown by members of the 4-H club in the east end of Phillips County won many honors in the junior show at the National Western livestock Show in Denver last week. Some of the results for youths from the Haxtun community: Medium Shorthorn steers, Donna Fryrear, fourth place; light Hereford steers, Helen Fryrear, 13th; medium heavy Angus steers, Gerald Freemyer, 10th; medium Hereford steers, Gloria Fryrear, 8th; heavy shorthorn steers, Janice Freemyer, 10th. In the state group of 10 counties, Gloria Fryrear won third place with her showing of 4-H livestock.


Slugs or iron washers are not acceptable in payment of toll calls over the Haxtun Telephone system. When Floyd Reyher, manager of the local exchange, found a few iron washers in his pay booth Monday morning, he began a little detective work to apprehend the culprit. A stranger in town was taken in tow shortly after making a long distance call. Mr. Reyher had found iron washers in the pay station for the second time. The man was taken into custody by Town Marshal Herbert R. Meakins in his room at the Shirley and turned over to the sheriff's office at Holyoke. The man was in Haxtun selling a collection agency service to local business firms. It is reported that he also operated in Holyoke where slugs were found in the pay station at the telephone office in the county seat.

Jan. 15, 1976

Mr. and Mrs. Stacey Waldrip are parents of a son born Jan. 13 in Sterling. He was named Jeremiah Clinton.

Mr. and Mrs. David McClain are the parents of a boy born Jan. 15, 1976. He was named David Michael McClain.

Malynda Kae Green celebrated her first birthday on Jan. 6, 1976. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Green of Littleton. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Green Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Jenik, all of Sedgwick. Great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Green of Haxtun, Mr. and Mrs. John Harms of Paoli, and Mrs. John Peters of Ontario, Calif.


Members of Fleming's Senior Citizens' Club installed to direct the 1976 activities were John Wells, sergeant at arms; Mamie West, historian; Beulah Hradecky, sunshine girl; Ruth Wheeler, treasurer; Mary Hager, secretary; Ted Wernsman, vice president; and Alta Curtis, president. Stan Gengler, director of Logan County Recreation from Sterling was in Fleming to install the officers.

Jan. 17, 1991

New Year baby Jackson Leonard Johnson and mother Dawn Johnson received surprise visitors bearing gifts. Representing the local Sigma Phi Beta chapter are Arlene Carper and Darlene Widgery.


Obituary: Ruth Katherine (Meyer) Strehlow, 84, died Jan. 6, 1991, at the Melissa Memorial Hospital, Holyoke.

Cindy Lou Potter of rural Haxtun was taken to Haxtun Hospital by a passing motorist following a one-vehicle accident Monday morning. According to a report, a tire blew on Potter's 1984 Toyota pickup, causing it to roll two complete turns.

Judge David O. Colver swears in elected Phillips County officials: sheriff Dick Potter, commissioner Jay Martin, treasurer Linda Statz, county assessor Mary Belle Rafert, and county clerk Mary Louise Evans.

Steve Watson and his wife Mary Kay, and children, are moving from his pastorate at the Berean Church at Haxtun to Freemont, Neb.

Fleming future alumni: Sixth graders at Fleming are Sara Atkinson, Nickie Unrein, Jaclyn Miles, Ben Wrysch, Dale Comstock, Tim Whitmore and Toby Huey. Teacher is Shelly Etl.

Facing tough opposition against Holyoke, Haxtun's Lady Bulldogs defeated their opponents for the third week straight.

The building that once housed a pool hall in Paoli came crashing down on Jan. 13. An excavator pulled into town on Thursday morning and within minutes the building that once sat along the south side of Highway 6 was no more.

The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs tallied their third win of the season with a 57-23 victory over the Creek Valley Lady Storm on Friday, Jan. 14. The night before, Haxtun suffered a loss to the Lady Wildcats from Fleming.
