The Fleming Lady Wildcats, who have not participated in a CHSAA sanctioned sport in nearly a year, reappeared on the basketball court last weekend. Last year's season came to an abrupt halt just one game into the 1A State Tournament in mid-March 2020 due to COVID-19 and with CHSAA's rescheduling of sports seasons this year, the volleyball season is set to take place following basketball.

This year's squad strapped on their shoes a few weeks ago to begin preparing for last weekend's season openers. The girls hit the road for those two games; traveling first to Caliche where they grabbed a win over the Lady Buffaloes and then to Haxtun where they fell in a close contest to the Lady Bulldogs.

Friday's game at Caliche closed with Fleming on top 69-27. Scores by quarter and individual stats were not provided for the contest.

On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats visited the neighboring Haxtun Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldogs also entered the contest at 1-0 having defeated the Peetz Lady Bulldogs in their season opener the night prior.

Fleming came out on top in the first quarter of the game putting up 16 points while giving up just 13 to the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Wildcats double their score in the second adding another 16 to give them a seven-point advantage at the half.

The Lady Wildcats remained out in front after outscoring Haxtun by one in the third quarter, 10-9, to bring the total tally to 42-34.

The Lady Bulldog offense added their game-high tally of the night in the fourth quarter with 18 points. Their offensive performance coupled with defensive efforts that held the Lady Wildcats to six points allowed Haxtun to take and hold the lead at the final horn, 52-48.

Individual stats for the Lady Wildcats were not reported.

Fleming is set to travel to Weldon Valley on Friday, Feb. 5 and Genoa-Hugo on Saturday, Feb. 6 before hosting their home opener on Tuesday, Feb. 9 against Merino.

Weldon Valley opened with a loss on Saturday at the hands of the Wiggins Lady Tigers. They were set to take on Prairie Tuesday evening, Feb. 2. Genoa-Hugo went 0-2 to open their season with losses to Kiowa and Limon. And Merino currently stands at 0-1 following a week one loss to Burlington.
