85 Years Ago

Feb. 5, 1936

Death brought sorrow to the family of Mr. and Mrs. G.B. Hire twice within 12 hours last Saturday. By the strange hand of fate, a sister of Mrs. Hire's passed away in Curtis, Neb., a few hours after Mr. Hire's sister died in Haxtun. Mrs. Hire's sister was Mrs. Catherine Nichoali, 59. Mr. Hire's sister was Mrs. Faye A. Green, 54, who had been visiting with the Hires.

Three carloads of pipe for Haxtun's new water mains were unloaded here this week by WPA laborers. One carload of the pipe has been moved by the men and is being placed along the ditch. Other materials, including valves, fittings and copper tubing are expected to arrive within a short time, according to Harry Bellamy, supervisor of the project.

During the past year, 1,625,000 trees were planted on national forests in Colorado, chiefly by CCC men, reports Prof. W.J. Morrill, head of the forestry department at Colorado State College, Fort Collins.


Highland Center News - Marion Brown and William Schachterle Jr. (Pat) celebrated their 12th and 13th birthdays, respectively, at a party at the Walter Brown home last Saturday. The two junior Sunday school classes had planned a surprise on them.

Bryant News - Mr. and Mrs. Brune Aden and baby and Henry Ewers were supper guests at the Frank Freemyer home Saturday.

Feb. 7, 1951

The Harvest has been informed that the first cloud seeding in northern Colorado took place Jan. 27, preceding the three-day snowstorm that left a blanket of snow over the entire northern Colorado area east of the mountains. One cloud-seeding generator was placed south of the Colorado-Wyoming line; one on the Colorado-Kansas line south of the Nebraska state line. Three generators were placed in operation in the vicinity of Aspen, on the Western Slope. The operation was done before a contract was made with Dr. Irving P. Krick's firm. Since that time a contract has been completed between his company and the Northeastern Colorado Water Resources Association.


Miss Minnie Emelie Wagner, 70, passed away Feb. 5, Haxtun.

William O. Larson, Manager of the Haxtun Locker Plant, recently received word that he had won two prizes in a contest sponsored by the Colorado Frozen Foods Locker Association. For commercial cured hams, the Haxtun Locker Plant tied for first place with the Sterling Ice and Cold Storage Company. In the bacon division, the Haxtun Plant tied for second with the Ray Poultry House of Greeley.

Feb. 5, 1976

LPAA's 1976 league wrestling champions, the Fleming Wildcats, are pictured: Don Grauberger, manager, Gary Nelson, Rick Curtis, Leon Weibers, Coach Monte Anderson, James Dodd, Bruce Unrein, Jim Bornhoft, Joe Thomas, Kelly Davis, Steve Unrein and Mark Burenheide.

Deaths: Dale Kohrell, Feb. 2; Anna Mae Becker, 79, funeral services Jan. 19, 1976.

Gwen Smith, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Smith of Haxtun, has been chosen as the Herald's first artist of the month. Gwen is shown with her painting and Mrs. Val Gillotte, Haxtun's art instructor.

Darlene Davis is Fleming High's 1976 Heart Queen. Numerous activities are being planned in her support. All proceeds are given to the Heart Fund.


The recent Casselman sale brought more airplanes to the Haxtun Airport than it has seen at one time. Marlo Sharpe told the Herald that 35 planes landed at the local air strip at one time or another during the day of the sale.

Rev. G.J. Benesh was named Alumnus of the Year for 1976 at the recent banquet held for alumni of the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. He has served as minister of the United Methodist Church in Haxtun since 1970.

Obituary: Harold Arthur Yost, 76, Feb. 3, 1991.

Local Beta Sigma Phi members appeared happy with the turnout of last week's blood drive to collect blood for Operation Desert Storm. "We were shooting for 50 and we got 38 donors ..." said Corina Wilson.


Rare identical triplet calves were born at Starkebaum farms on Friday, Feb. 1. According to Richard "Curly" Starkebaum, the all weighed in at 54 pounds each.

Fleming junior high Lady Wildcats: Angie Grauberger, Mary Muich, Amber Mekelburg, Sarah Bock, Katrina Crawford, Janelle Monroe, Michelle Rigel, Tiffany Nelson, Lisa Koehler and coach Leo Mekelburg.

Former Haxtunite Phil Kroeker was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant Colonel, according to his mother, Mrs. Alice K. Knaus. He works full time for the Colorado Army National Guard and is the executive officer for the 169th Field Artillery Brigade in Aurora.

Winners of the Haxtun Elementary Spelling Bee are pictured: Hannah Gibbs, Deborah Kurtzer, Taylor Andersen, Madison Anderson, Kade Hiller, Logan Fetzer, Bo Soukup, Seth Thompson, Kaitlyn Anderson and Megan Gerk.

In their first meeting in 2011, Phillips County Commissioners Bud Biesemeier and Jerry Beavers welcomed newly elected Joe Kinnie to the Board of County Commissioners.

Visitors to Haxtun Schools during normal hours will notice a change in the way they enter the school building. On Feb. 1, the school started using a new security system that was purchased with grant funds received by the Haxtun School District and Haxtun Police Department.
