HAXTUN SENIOR Bella Tori, #21, reaches for a loose ball near the baseline in a contest with Caliche two weeks ago.

With a 1-1 finish in the second to last week of regular season basketball action the Haxtun Lady Bulldogs hold a 7-5 overall record and stand 5-3 in league play. The Lady Bulldogs have one final game remaining on the regular season schedule before advancing to post-season play.

Over the past week, Haxtun faced off with the top-ranked 2A Holyoke Lady Dragons and the Wiggins Lady Tigers, both on the road. The Lady Bulldogs fell to Holyoke but bounced back for a win in Wiggins to go 1-1 on the week.

In the small gym at Holyoke High School, Haxtun put 16 points on the board in the first quarter, trailing by just one to the home team. The Lady Dragons added 16 to the board before half time while holding Haxtun to 10 to widen the scoring gap to seven at the halfway point.

The two teams battled in the third, Haxtun scoring 10 and the Lady Dragons 15 but the final quarter slowed for the Lady Bulldogs as the team managed just seven points to their opponents' 14. The Dragons took the Phillips County showdown, 62-43.

"We were up against the undefeated Lower Platte League leaders and one of the premier teams in 2A this year. Our girls came out strong and competed well against a very good team," Arlan Scholl, Lady Bulldogs Head Coach, said. "We had some foul trouble early, but our bench players came in and did a good job to keep us in the game. I felt like we played as well as our team is capable of playing against that kind of size and pressure. We gave it our all and got a little tired toward the end of the game, but never gave up. That is the character of this team and I am so proud to be a part of this group."

Two Lady Bulldogs netted double digits in Holyoke last week led by junior K'Lyn Bornhoft with 11 points followed by senior Bella Tori with 10. Allie Thompson put up nine points while junior Taylor Schram added eight.

Thompson led her team at the charity stripe, shooting 100 percent. Schram and Cassidy Goodwin each shot 50 percent at the free-throw line. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs connected with 5 of 12 shots for 42 percent.

Under the hoop, Thompson pulled down nine rebounds, the team high. She nabbed two on offense and seven on defense. Schram pulled down five rebounds followed by Tori with four. Schram led in assists with seven while Cassidy Goddard, Thompson, Bornhoft and Schram all combined for a total 11 steals.

The Lady Bulldogs took the road again on Friday as they traveled to take on the Lady Tigers in Wiggins, this time coming away with a win after an impressive late-game takeover.

The Haxtun team trailed by three after the first quarter and both teams added 10 points in the second to leave the scoreboard at 21-18 Wiggins at the half. The Lady Bulldogs chipped away at the Lady Tigers' lead in the third, outscoring their opponent by one. It all came down to the final quarter where the Lady Bulldog defense held Wiggins to just six points while the offense added 11 to take a final 42-39 victory.

Thompson led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points Friday night. The junior connected with five of nine shots under the basket. Bornhoft and Schram each added nine points for a combined 18 followed by Tori with eight on the night.

As a team, Haxtun made nine of 23 free-throw attempts to go 39 percent from the charity stripe.

Goddard nabbed 10 rebounds under the hoop, the team high, pulling down two on offense and eight on defense. Thompson came down with eight rebounds followed by Bornhoft with seven.

Schram again led her team in assists, this time with three, while Thompson, Bornhoft, Tori and Goddard each tallied two. As for steals, Thompson and Schram combined for a total of 18 in the game; splitting it evenly with nine a piece.

This week, Haxtun traveled to Otis on Tuesday for a match up of the Bulldogs. That game was played after press time and will be featured in next week's edition of the Herald.

On Friday, the team is slated to travel to take on the Lady Cougars in Sedgwick County. According to Maxpreps, Sedg. Co. currently holds an 11-2 overall record with a recent loss to Fleming. Game time on Friday is 4 p.m.
