With the completion of the Spirit state championships last weekend, CHSAA's Season B has officially ended. That allows the focus to be shifted to Season C, which is already nearing its midpoint.

Swink was the first champion crowned last Thursday in the 2A/3A Game Day Cheer section. The Lions were solid in the preliminaries, posting a score of 83.50 points, earning the top position heading into the finals. They were even better in the finals, improving their score to 83.80, a mark that was more than six and a half points better than the runner-up.

The Class 2A Cheer event was hotly contested, with Limon bringing home a second place finish behind defending champion, Front Range Christian. Cheyenne Wells, who was third in 2019, matched that finish. Wiley claimed fourth and Holyoke took home sixth.

Competing for the first time in the Class 2A/3A Co-Ed division, Stratton earned a top-three finish. Their score of 59.35 with no deductions put them behind last year's top two finishers, Coal Ridge and Bayfield last Friday.

In spring football, Las Animas fell to 1-1 with last week's 58-22 loss to Front Range Christian. The Trojans only trailed 14-6 after the first quarter, but were on the wrong end of a 16-0 second quarter, which proved to be too much to overcome. They're at home this Friday against Custer County. Hoehne, who had the week off, will host Front Range Christian on Saturday, in a clash of 1-0 squads.

Lamar improved to 3-0 in Class 3A boys soccer, blasting James Irwin 5-1 last Saturday. The Savages have outscored their opponents 16-3 through three matches. This week's schedule includes matches against Atlas Prep on Tuesday and at Salida on Thursday.

Last week saw Fort Morgan earn its first win of the Class 4A soccer slate, as the Mustangs blanked Mountain View 10-0 on the road last Thursday. They scored five goals in each half. That followed last Tuesday's 4-0 loss to Northridge. The Mustangs were 1-2 ahead of Tuesday's home tilt against Severance. A trip to Frederick awaits the squad on Thursday and they'll be home on Saturday to face Riverdale Ridge.

The highlight of the last week in the small schools for volleyball was the Spring Fling hosted by Kit Carson on Saturday. Five of the six squads involved in the event were ranked, four in the top-six of their respective classifications. Pool A was won by Class 1A's top-ranked squad, Fleming, who beat Wiley (#14 last week) and 2A Yuma (#6 in 2A last week) 3-0 in each match.

Wiggins, 2A's #3 team last week, took Pool B by defeating Holly 3-0 and Kit Carson (1A #3) in four. Fleming would go on to defeat Wiggins in five tough sets to earn the championship. Wiley claimed third with a 3-1 win over the hosts and Yuma picked up a 3-0 win over Holly to take fifth.

Stratton/Liberty is off to a 3-0 start in 1A, having taken nine of 10 sets played. The Lady Knighted Eagles opened with a 3-0 sweep of Eads last Tuesday and then followed that up with a 3-1 victory over then #4 Otis on Thursday. They were dominant in Saturday's 3-0 sweep of Arickaree/Woodlin, never surrendering more than 16 points in a set. The Lady Knighted Eagles were at Limon, preseason #2 in 2A, on Tuesday, and will visit Idalia on Thursday.

It's been an interesting start to the season for McClave, who entered the week 3-0, but had to work five sets in each victory. Last week, they defeated Kim/Branson 15-10 in the fifth to earn the win on Thursday and then downed South Baca 17-15 after trailing two sets to one in the match. That was a clash of ranked teams.

While Wiggins has lived up to the preseason hype in 2A, adding sweeps of Yuma and Wray earlier last week, and sitting 4-1 through one week of play, Byers has already exceeded expectations. The Lady Bulldogs did not receive a single vote in the preseason, but they were 3-0 heading into this week, without having dropped a set along the way. The program only won eight matches all of last season, but is nearly already halfway there.

Through the first two weeks of play, Lamar sat with a perfect 3-0 mark, with wins in all nine sets played. The Lady Savages did not allow more than 18 points in any of those first nine sets. They defeated La Junta last week with sophomore Sydney Dunning pounding out 18 kills. She racked up 44 kills entering this week. Their only action this week is a Thursday visit to Florence.

La Junta responded to that loss by taking a five-setter from Pueblo Centennial at home on Friday. The Lady Tigers dropped the first two sets, but roared back to claim the match with a 15-8 fifth set. Raini Tafoya cranked out a dozen kills in the match and Malionna Palacio added 10. After visiting Manitou Springs on Tuesday, the Lady Tigers will host St. Mary's on Thursday.

Brush dropped its opener to 10th ranked Platte Valley in straight sets last Thursday, but bounced back with a five-set win over Flatirons Academy on Saturday. That match went back and forth throughout, with the Lady Diggers taking the fifth 15-11 from Flatirons, who less than a week earlier had won the Class 1A state basketball crown. Brush faces an important week with league games against Eaton, Sterling, and University, all of whom are ranked.

Fort Morgan's upset of previously ranked Longmont in the opening week caught the attention of several 4A coaches and the Lady Mustangs nearly cracked the top-15 in last week's poll. Losses to Frederick (3-1) and Thompson Valley (3-0) sent them heading the other way. Both of those opponents were right with Fort Morgan in the group just outside of the top-15. This is a busy week for the Lady Mustangs, who had matches scheduled with Berthoud, Riverdale Ridge and Northridge.
