A popular and unanimous vote was accorded Chief Harry O'Hare at the annual meting of the Haxtun Volunteer Fire Department meeting Wednesday evening. The members re-elected him to head the organization for the third successive term. Other officers: Barton Nauman, assistant chief; George McCulloch, chemical captain; Earl Johnson, hose, hook and ladder captain; and James Fitgerald Jr., secretary/treasurer. Charles Ruff was elected to the finance committee. J.A. Work, Harry Bellamy and R.E. McKay were named on the grievance committee.
New officers of the Haxtun Golf Club: L.F. Yowell, president; R.V. Exstrom, vice president; and Ralph Gale, secretary/treasurer. Membership committee, Lorin Anderson, Kenneth Burt, and W.C. Moore; tournament committee, R.V. Exstrom, H.W. Hasley, and James Fitzgerald Jr. .; entertainment committee, C.F. Becker, Ray Phillips, and A.R. Gray.

Fleming News - Thirty-eight members of the senior class of the Fleming High School and their sponsor, Phillip Johnson, left for the annual sneak day Friday morning. The weekend was spent in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Canon City. Miss Ruth Borgman and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hulse chaperoned the group.

Phillips County Grade School spelling contest in Haxtun: Ardell Krueger, 13, Holyoke eighth grade winer of the oral contest, will represent the count at the state contest. Dick Fanning, a former Nebraska newspaper publisher, has assumed the position of editor at the Haxtun Herald. He assumes the position vacated by Karen Smith. The Herald is currently waiting on work from the U.S. Postal Service regarding second-class mailing privileges, and the newspaper is almost halfway to becoming a bona fide legal newspaper, having published 21 of the required 52 consecutive issues.
Loren Whitmore, local high school instructor and former, has been having trouble with predator attacks against his sheep her for some time. During the night of March 22, three of his lambs were killed and five crippled by unknown killers. Authorities have identified the victims as being killed by dogs.
Tom Brotherton, local druggist, is one of many men in the area who are joining the growing trend towards whiskers during the centennial-bicentennial year.

After eight years on the Haxtun RE-2J School District Board, Steve Firme will not seek re-election. The five candidates running for school board are Pat Seger, Tom Edwards, Caroline Newth, Lauren Heermann and Kenneth Gueck.
Haxtun Town Board members surprised Jan Bjorklun, clerk/treasurer, with a birthday cake following Monday night's meeting. Member Mark McLaughlin performs the serving.
Richard and Ardith Nestor of Sterling are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Jeri to Troy Anderson, son of Larry and Jean Anderson, Haxtun.

When 24-year-old Ben Cox was seriously injured in a skiing accident on March 17, it took less than one week for a group of community members to come together to set up a benefit for him and his family. The Cox Family Benefit is scheduled for Saturday, April 2 at the Haxtun Fire Hall.
If there was one thing Mimi Weaver could tell people following her diagnosis of cancer, it would be to trust your instincts. If she hadn't her story could possibly be much different.
