SEAN GILLOTTE, son of Mike and Val Gillotte, was among the State winners in the Knights of Columbus Hoop Shoot held recently in Sterling. Sean, who competed in the 11-year-old boys' division is pictured above, back row far right. This was his first competition in Hoop Shooting. 85 Years Ago

April 15, 1936

In honor of her 80th birthday anniversary, Mrs. C.J. Eckman was given a pleasant surprise party last Friday. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Eckman and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Eckman, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Eckman, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Eckman, Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Sandquist, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Franson, Mrs. Allen Tack and Mr. and Mrs. Peterson. Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Sand called in the evening.

Death: Griffin Wilkinson Crossland, 24, April 14, 1936. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Robert, Victor and Arlie, and four sisters, Lucille, Alice, Vera and Annabelle. His grandfather Griffin Guernsey of Paoli also survives.

A pretty Easter wedding occurred Sunday afternoon at the home of County Commissioner and Mrs. John Sandquist in Holyoke, when their daughter, Miss Linnea, became the bride of Mr. Bernard Franson. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. E.W. Fondell of Fairfield. Mrs. William Larson of Haxtun was matron of honor. Mr. Franson was attended by Mr. William Larson.


More than 300 children took part in the wild scramble in search of candy eggs in the annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Commercial Club and business men of the town.

70 Years Ago

April 18, 1951

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hinde Tuesday. She weighed 8 ½ pounds and has been named Gayle Anne.

In a beautiful wedding service Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the Fleming Methodist Church, Miss Gayle Yount, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted H. Yount, and Harold Brecht, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brecht of Crook, were united in marriage. Rev. Harold Dodson read the double-ring ceremony.


Robert Grauberger was elected commander of the Fred C. Lewman Post No. 137 of the American Legion at Haxtun Tuesday night. Other officers: Eldon Salyards, first vice commander; Dale Burt, second vice commander; Jay J. Sturgis, adjutant; Lee Hinde, finance officer; Clinton Jeffers, chaplain; J.A. Work, historian; Boyd Dunbar, sergeant-at-arms; Howard B. Prouty, service office.

Fleming News - LaVonne Lippitt, Joyce Yount, Mary Andrews, Grace Hagemeier, Joan Fitzjohn, Shirley Plank and Iola Davis, FHA girls of the Fleming school, gave a radio broadcast over station KGEK in Sterling April 11. Mrs. Lillian Lippitt acted as interpreter for the broadcast.

April 15, 1976

Haxtun city clerk Glenn Jones is pictured with the new Haxtun mayor Tommy Thompson and former mayor J.B. Hoadley. Jones was named town clerk just a few days before Hoadley was elected to his first term as councilman. Also pictured: New councilmen Robert Fetzer and Mike Koellner take the oath of office in a brief ceremony Monday evening.

Participating in the science and math fair were Mike Wall, Doug Lick, Bev Wilson, Steve Starkebaum, Art Lick, Tammy Ridenour and Shirley Carlson.

Mrs. Dorothy Ruch entertained relatives at a birthday coffee last Wednesday afternoon in honor of her sister, Mrs. Wesley Garretson. Guests were Mrs. Elsie Giles, Mrs. Alta Ruch, Mrs. Bernard Franson, Mrs. Alvy Garretson, Mrs. Philip Ruch, Mrs. Paul Ruch, Mrs. Douglas Ruch, and Jamie Sue, Mrs. Harold Ruch, and Mrs. Ralph Peterson.


The first visible activity on the new gymnasium took place Tuesday morning with the planting of several rows of trees on the north and west sides of the site to serve as a windbreak. Pictured: Clark Starkebaum. Superintendent Eldon Reutter, Emil Reagan and Russell Cordrey. Board president Leonard Michael also helped with the planting.

30 Years Ago

April 18, 1991

Six students from Haxtun High School were inducted into the National Honor Society April 9. They are pictured with current members also: Thomas Herndon, Beth Wernsman, Christine Salyards, Catina Klinzman, Melissa Free, Chris Fuesz, Staci Starkebaum, Connie Howard, Mark Meakins, Justin McDaniel, Keisha Howard and Anita Fetzer. John Chapdelaine is their advisor.


Jeff (Braun) Pfaff, 1989 graduate of Haxtun High School, assisted McCook Community College to a 29-8 basketball season this year. Pfaff, a sophomore, plays guard and served as team captain last season.

April 13, 2011

Progress to start construction for Haxtun's new main street continues as the Town Council voted on a funding avenue during a meeting April 4. The Council agreed to accept a proposal from Saulsbury Hill Financial for the $750,000 project.

Fleming High School seniors Arika Muller and Daniel Martinez were crowned 2011 Prom Queen and King following the grand march on Saturday, April 9. Other seniors nominated for the honor included Josi Arnold, Ashley Atkin, Chelsea Larson, Molly Nelson, Kelsey Schmidt, Jena Monheiser, Jenna Vandenbark, Steven Asfeld, Trevor Combs, Khy Rigel and Justin Stone.

Haxtun junior high student Courtney Lundgren recently placed fourth in a State essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
