June 10, 1936

A course in vocational agriculture will be available to students in the Haxtun High School this coming year, according to J.A. Grant, principal. C.W. Scofield, who has been engaged in the high school at Joes during the last two years, will be the new instructor at Haxtun.

Deaths: Mrs. H.L. Friend, 74, a resident in the south country for the last 18 years, passed away at her home Saturday morning, June 6, 1936. Mrs. Elmer Felderman is a daughter of the deceased. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning for William J. Liggett, 84, who passed away June 8 at a hospital in Haxtun.

Rex Gullion, former Haxtun boy, and Miss Dorothy Ninni of Anaheim, Calif., were married in California on Tuesday of this week. The bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Gullion of this city.

Hollyrood Wilmaken, fast-stepping pacing horse owned by Dr. W.E. Mooney of Haxtun, won the feature race at the city park track in Denver Saturday afternoon, taking the 2:20 pace in two straight heats. The time was 2:19 and 2:17.


A brooder house fire resulted in the loss of 500 young chickens at the J.N. Skold farm in the Fairfield community Sunday.

70 Years Ago

June 13, 1951

Lou Waterman is the fishing champ of Haxtun this week. On a fishing trip the past weekend on the reservoir of the Kingsley dam in Nebraska, Mr. Waterman caught a 10-pound catfish and four white bass weighing about 1 1/2 pounds each.

Rains over the entire Haxtun territory the past week practically assure sufficient moisture to develop a normal wheat crop in this region. Rains at Haxtun brought approximately 1.30 inches of moisture. South of town in the vicinity of the Frank Freemyer farm, the rainfall was reported to have been near seven inches, washing fields and damaging fences. Paoli and vicinity has received 9.48 inches in the form of rain and snow since the first of January to June 11.


Mrs. Charles G. Galbreath, 78, formerly of Haxtun, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 12, 1951, in the Fort Collins hospital.

Fleming News - In observance of their 25th wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. B.V. Wheeler held an open house on Sunday afternoon in their home.

Fairfield News - Bible school teachers this week are Miss Imogene Garretson, Mesdames Rickar Roos, Arvid Anderson, Arlo Ferguson, J. Voris, Jake Ricker, Paul Ruch, Herman Hadeen, and Miss Jodelle Roos.

June 10, 1976

Deaths: Walter C. Biesemeier, 76, died June 2, 1976; Alvin H. Carson, 48, Eaton, died Friday May 28; George H. Rhoades, 75, Guysmills, Pa., died May 20.

Junior High Youth of the Haxtun United Methodist Church on tour of Denver and Central City historical churches: Jimmy Orth, Chris Peterson, Mark Orcutt, Troy Whitmore, Brett Garretson, Ronnie Martin, Lori Zimmerman, Shelly Burton, Joni Ham, Susan Davis, Mindy Hunt, Tamara Benesh, and Tammy Bjorklun. Mrs. Pat Garretson, Mrs. Chuck Hunt, and Rev. and Mrs. Gordon Benesh were trip sponsors.

Richard "Rick" C. Quisenberry, 24, a native of Lamaie, Wyo., began his duties June 1 as patrolman with the Fleming Police Force. The other member of the two-man Fleming force is Robert Weiler, who was hired last March.


Juanita Booher, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Virgil Booher, has been named artist of the month of June. She graduated in May from Haxtun High School.

Larry McConnell was the winner of the championship flight in the annual F&H Golf tournament held last Sunday. Lowell Heath was second and Larry McCarty third.

June 13, 1991

After five months in the Persian Gulf, brothers Jeff and Craig Guernsey are expected to return to the States, according to their mother, Betty McBee of Paoli.

First birthdays: Sierra Lyn Lowry, daughter of Kirk and Teresa Lowry, Phillipsburg, Kan., celebrates her first birthday on June 14, 1991. Ryan Duane Lawrence Wagner, son of Dennis and Cindy (Lundgren) Wagner, Iliff, celebrated his first birthday on April 30, 1991; Mallory Sue Neal, daughter of Mindy and Bart Neal, Ogden, Utah, celebrated her first birthday on March 24, 1991.


Suzi Harris, 1991 graduate of Haxtun High School, signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebr. The 5'10" middle blocker is the daughter of Bill and JoAnn Harris, Haxtun.

Enjoying a picnic at the Kerm and Carol Scheel home Saturday evening, June 1, were Hank and Zetta Scheel and Goldie Riel, Greeley; Norma Scheel Green of Estes Park; Melvin, Vivian and Randy Spanjer of Wheatridge, and Roger, Vera, Carisa and Kendra Hagemeier, Sterling. All except the Hagemeiers attended the Dailey school reunion at the Park Inn in Sterling on Sunday.

Three Haxtun students were recently chosen to attend Boys' and Girls' State. Josh Turney and Brent Vasa have been selected by the Haxtun American Legion to attend Colorado Boys' State at Colorado State University South in Pueblo from June 5-11. Katelyn Kaus has been chosen by the American Legion Auxiliary to attend Colorado Columbine Girls' State at Western State in Gunnison from June 12-17.

Jenna Vandenbark, a 2011 graduate of Fleming High School, was recently selected as one of six finalists for the Fred Steinmark Award sponsored by the Colorado High School Coaches Association. Student athletes must be nominated for the award by a coach after meeting the following requirements: be a high school senior, carry a minimum of 3.0 grade-point average throughout his or her high school career, play a minimum of two sports each year and have been selected All-State in one sport and at least All-Conference in another sport.
