Under the Wire

It’s not raining dollars

If I could find my “Under The Wire” column written exactly one year ago, it is a pretty sure thing there was a reference to our part of the country being very dry. We were ankle deep in dust with poor to no grass and a rapidly shrinking hay stack. Adding insult to injury, hot dry winds howled nearly every day. Everyone who prayed, almost always included a request for rain. One year ago there was an explanation when something that should have happened, didn’t. “Due to Covid," kept tractor dealers from having parts and grocery stores from having chocolate chip cookies. Somehow, Covid kept it from raining.

Today, as I write this, my local tractor dealer thinks they may have my parts by Tuesday, although they won’t comment on which Tuesday it will be. Sue came home from our local grocery store with a package of chocolate chips. She nor the cookies were wearing masks. Covid may be gone and it has been raining and raining and more rain. Water holes everywhere are full of water, especially those in our driveway and yard.

We all know better than to complain. I don’t think you can undo prayers. I sure don’t want to.

There is, however, a down side to this wonderful change of weather. Our small, bounce around the ranch pickup needed new mud and snow tires in order to navigate our pasture roads. Truckloads of gravel, at $525 dollar per load, are scheduled in an attempt to make our driveway and yard less four wheel drive necessary.

We scrapped up a few thousand dollars to buy hay anticipating a continuation of drought. The unused bales now sit in water.

Our usually well-manicured yard now has grass about 12 inches tall, waiting for me to choose between the riding lawn mower or the New Holland sickle, hay mower.

I even toyed with the idea of putting up electric fence and turning a hundred or so cattle on our yard to eat down the grass. Son David suggested I not take that idea to his mother. I’m not writing with a broken arm so obviously I took his advice.

Don’t get me wrong. We love the rain. It’s just that we don’t know how to act when it comes. Hope it keeps up and hope we can afford more gravel, too!
