Old-Fashioned fun slated for Saturday night in downtown Haxtun

It’s July and that means Haxtun’s Old-Fashioned Saturday Night is just round the corner. The 34th annual event is slated for Saturday, July 17 in downtown Haxtun and promises the popular car show as well as town-wide garage sales, a poker run, vendors, burn out competition, street dance, beer garden and more.

This year, the Haxtun Chamber of Commerce joined forces with the Haxtun Volunteer Fire Department to host the annual Fireman’s Ball the same night. The beer garden and street dance will be held at the fire hall this year, starting at 6 p.m. The fireman plan to host the annual pulled pork meal from 5-7 p.m. at the fire hall while also providing music for the evening’s beer garden.

Throughout 2020, the local 30-member fire department responded to 36 emergency calls in the Haxtun community while also accumulating over 1,000 hours of training.

To donate to the local fire department, contributions may be made at the fire hall during the event or sent to Haxtun Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 385, Haxtun, CO 80731.

Old-Fashioned Saturday Night events kick off at 8 a.m. with town-wide garage sales. According to organizer Chris Kuehn, there are over 25 multi-family garage sale locations this year. Maps will be available Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Haxtun Super’s and the Zip Trip gas station.

At 11 a.m. bikes and riders of all kinds will depart from the Haxtun Fire Hall for a poker run, slated to take participants to Sedgwick, Sterling, Atwood and Yuma before the final card is drawn at 4 p.m. at the Haxtun Fire Hall. The poker run will pay out in cash prizes to top winners while also benefitting the Haxtun Swimming Pool project.

Car show registration begins on Colorado Avenue at 3 p.m. with the show to follow from 4-6 p.m. Awards will be given to the top five overall entrants in addition to a semi-truck award; a new category to the show this year. Car show award winners will be announced on stage at 7 p.m.

Following the car show, the ever-popular burnout competition will begin at the corner of Colorado Avenue and Strohm Street at 6:30 p.m. As the smoke settles and the crowd votes on their favorite, the winner will receive a cash prize in addition to an award. Second and third place winners will receive a full-service oil change.

In conjunction with the street dance and beer garden, the Haxtun Community Childcare Center plans to host the sixth annual cornhole competition at the fire hall. Participants must be 21 years of age and older; to register, contact Julie Thayer at (970) 520-7470.

Other attractions throughout the day include kiddie land with inflatable bounce houses, dunk tank and Dozer games as well as vendors and more.
