County treasurer Ray E. Crosby announced to the voters this week that he would be a candidate on the Republican ticket for reelection this fall. Mr.Crosby, who has entered his fourth year as county treasurer, will likely have no opposition in the primary race.

Showers of rain brought temporary relief from the heatwave at Haxtun during the weekend, although the precipitation was not sufficient to benefit crops to any great extent. Quite a number of men have been employed in the harvest fields during the last two weeks. There has been sufficient work to give employment to all laborers in Haxtun and a number of men who came in for the harvest were able to obtain work.

Fred W. Damrow of Haxtun became the second Democratic candidate to announce himself for the office of country sheriff last week. Damrow and Henry C. Redies of Holyoke are the only Democratic candidates who have so far announced for the primary race for sheriff.

July 18, 1951

Hospital news: Mrs . James Berkey and infant daughter Mary Ann were released Friday. A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Critchlow Monday. He weighed six pounds, six ounces, and has been named Randall Jay. Mrs. Victor Waln and daughter Marsha were dismissed Monday.

Edward Fix, 77, a prominent farmer of the Highland Center community, passed away Tuesday (July 17, 1951) following an illness of three weeks' duration.

Fleming: Privates Ronald and Donald spent the week with their folks, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Wilson, before being transferred to another camp.


Dailey News - Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lindgren and Glendora, Mary Ann, Barbara and Connie Daley, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Daley enjoyed a picnic at the Haxtun park Sunday.

Picturing the family farm as the taproot of democracy and the strongest roadblock against the march of communism in a war weary world, Secretary of Agriculture Charles F. Brannan is urging the American people to come forward with suggestions for the betterment of that service.

July 15, 1976

Funeral services for Wesley Leroy Garretson were held on Thursday at the Fairfield Covenant Church. He died Monday evening, July 12, 1976, at the Logan County Hospital in Sterling at the age of 74.

Funeral services for Agnes M. Fiedler were held Wednesday in Holyoke. She died Saturday, July 10, 1976, at the age of 69.


Dispatcher Sandy Kiehl is pictured standing beside the new logging recorder recently installed in the dispatch room at the Phillips County sheriff's office. The recorder, which costs approximately $8,000, was purchased through the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration with a $7,064 grant from the federal government and $837.44 from Phillips County and the City of Holyoke.

Highland Center News - Sunday dinner guests at the Robert Fetzer home were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Johnson of Fort Morgan. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fetzer and Jill, and Mr. and Mrs. Dave Fetzer and family. An afternoon caller was Arlene Bunker.

Adam Jason Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Hill of Denver, celebrated his first birthday on July 10.

Paoli News - Greg Renzelman is spending part of his summer at the home of his cousin Lynette Harms and husband Ken. He is from Broomfield.

July 18, 1991

Sue Einspahr, Fleming town clerk, has been selected for inclusion in the 1991 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America. Her nomination was submitted by Kent Gumina, director of Colorado Department of Local Affairs in Fort Morgan.

Nolan and Joyce Krueger, Amherst, are the parents of a girl, Ashley Mae, born July 10, 1991, at Sterling Regional MedCenter.

"Let's Clown Around" is the theme for this year's Phillips County Fair. Tuesday's evening concert features The Chugwater Philharmonic String Quartet.

Mother nature cooperated for Haxtun's Old-Fashioned Saturday Night, July 16, bringing hot temperatures and clear skies. With heat peaking to the high 90s, the afternoon event featured more than 20 vehicles in the car show competition.


Employees of the Haxtun Hospital District now have an option to benefit from a wellness plan/community partnership between the Haxtun Hospital District and Outback Fitness Center.

Wheat harvest in the Haxtun area is in full swing since Saturday, July 16 thanks to blazing temperatures and no moisture over the weekend. Scott Kirkwood from Grainland said the first load of wheat came into Haxtun on Saturday, July 9, but things didn't really get started until the weekend.
