Aug. 5, 1936

Paoli News - Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brahmstadt were Holyoke visitors Saturday evening. Lee Schneider, Leo Butte, and Milton Hill left last week for the mountains, where they expect to have work.

A full staff of teachers has been engaged in the Haxtun grade school for the coming year: First grade, Mrs. Julia Allen; second grade, Miss Ruby Bellamy; third grade, Miss Celeste Donnelly; fourth grade, Mrs. Lida Berkey; fifth grade, Miss Ruby Sand; sixth grade, Mrs. Dola Delander; seventh grade, Mrs. Floyd Brouhard; eighth grade and principal, Dana Archbold; music and junior high subjects, Mrs. Nicolena J. Riggin.

The WPA crew at Haxtun unloaded 1,000 sacks of cement this week, which will be used constructing the new municipal swimming pool. Work on the pool has been progressing rather slowly because of a shortage of labor, but all of the forms are now in place and the crew will start the running of cement within the next few days. Six men and the foreman, Theodore Sharpe are now employed on the project.


70 Years Ago

Aug. 8, 1951

Sunday, Aug. 6, 1951, is a day to be remembered by friends of Haxtun's First Methodist Church. Over 500 people attended and participated in some of the all-day services that marked the opening of the impressive new church and educational annex.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for Mrs. Chase Carrick Donaldson, 87, Sterling. The Donaldson family formerly lived in Haxtun, where they operated a hardware store for many years.

Miss Maxine Grauberger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Grauberger of Sterling, and Pfc. Rex Hadeen were united in marriage Thursday evening in a candlelight service at the First Methodist Church in Sterling. The double-ring wedding vows were read by Rev. Vernon Hanks before an alter flanked with white and red gladioli. The couple left Monday for California, where Mr. Hadeen is stationed at Camp Roberts.


Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Tanner and infant daughter Karen Jean were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Tanner's mother, Mrs. Bertha Thompson.

Mr. and Mrs. William Salvador and son Rodney, and Mrs. E.O. Bentson spent Monday in Wray.

Mike Gretch, a well-known and popular farmer north of Haxtun, suffered a painful injury last Thursday when his right hand was caught and mangled in a feed grinder. Two fingers were amputated.


45 Years Ago

Aug. 5, 1976

Former residents safe in Big Thompson flood: Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wilson received a call from their daughter Marilyn (Mrs. Michael Fink) of Fort Collins saying they were safe after being forced to spend Saturday night on the side of a mountain. Their car was swept away by the flood waters, but other than effects of spending a wet, miserable night, the people were not hurt.

Official starting school plans for Re-2J District: Enrollment, Aug. 26; activity fees and books, $13.50; annual, $5.00; lunches, 45 cents per meal for first through sixth grade and 50 cents for seventh through 12th.

Bouquets of orange carnations and yellow daisies adorned the Haxtun United Methodist Church for the July 25 wedding of Candace K. Salvador and Joseph L. Hofmeister. Rev. Eldon Shoemaker officiated at the 2:30 p.m. double-ring rites. The couple will reside south of Paoli where the groom is engaged in farming.


Mrs. Dorothy Barkey announces the engagement of her daughter Betty to Paul Knott, so of Mrs. Marion Knott. A September wedding is being planned by the couple.

Fleming News - There will be an open house bridal shower for Miss Darcie Daines Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church.

30 Years Ago

Aug. 8, 1991

Options remain open on county commissioner's seat: Jay Martin hopes to continue his role as District One commissioner in Phillips County. Martin, who suffered a stroke on March 27, has been released from the hospital and now takes therapy at his home. At the moment, the two remaining commissioners, Tommy Thompson and Larry Haynes, split Martin's responsibilities in regard to the operations of his district.


Lutheran youth head for Utah: Adult supervisors Leland Seger and Phyllis Hadeen, Brinda Hadeen, Jason Schmidt, Amanda Seger, Jill Potter, Dara Houser, Erin Hovel, Annette Houser, and Jason Hadeen. The youth people raised money for the weekend in Salt Lake City by sponsoring an Easter breakfast, a Father's Day breakfast, and a car wash. They also compiled and sold copies of a cookbook.

Jim Hess, Fleming superintendent, and Dr. Jack Pender, Haxtun superintendent, recently attend a Colorado 2000 workshop at Morgan Community College.

Aug. 10, 2011

Excitement fill the air when it came time to discuss financials for Haxtun Hospital District on Monday evening, Aug. 1. According to a cash narrative dated the same day as the meeting, HHD's cash on-hand balance totaled $799,401.

Plans are moving forward with Haxtun's main street project. Town Council members met with a representative from The Engineering Company during a work session prior to their regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 1. Rick Pickard, from TEC, presented project plans to council members, reviewed timing for the project and discussed the bidding process.
