Aug. 26, 1936

A vacancy appeared Monday for the coming school term when Mrs. Brouhard, who had been engaged to teach the seventh grade, returned her contract. At a special meeting of the school board, John Nauman of Haxtun was hired to fill this position. Mr. Nauman is a graduate of the Haxtun High School and received his life certificate from the Greeley State College of Education.

Miss Delma Cary, who had made her home at Haxtun during the last year, and Dale Wood of Holyoke, were married at high noon last Friday in Sterling, with Rev. Howard Elston officiating.

A pretty wedding occurred last Sunday at the Paoli Presbyterian Church when Miss Alma Re Bell became the bride of Mr. George Rudel Jr. of Fleming. The ceremony was performed at 12:30 o'clock by the Rev. Louis A. Hoerauf of Fleming.

Aug. 29, 1951

Albert Anderson, 72, who came to the Fairfield community when a boy of eight and who had lived there continuously since that time, passed away Thursday morning (Aug. 23, 1951). He came with his parents to the Fairfield community in 1887 and witnessed the change from range land and prairies to the thriving farming communities Haxtun and Fairfield are today.

William Samuel Salyards, 84, retired farmer and long-time resident of the Haxtun community, passed away Friday (Aug. 24, 1951). He came to the Haxtun community in 1908.

Eva Capps, daughter of Mrs. J.E. Stroup, and Thomas Wisdom Jr. were quietly married Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wisdom Sr., by Rev. George M. Burnworth.

Haxtun schools begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4. All freshmen will take general math and general science. It has been assumed that all girls will register for home economics. In case boys cannot take agriculture, they will be permitted to take Typing I if at all possible.

Not only were people from Haxtun on hand at the Colorado State Fair to support the local high school band, they let their presence be known each time Haxtun's name was called to receive an award. "You're certainly a loud group," the announcer said following a response after naming Haxtun the most improved band at this year's contest. The band also won in its division, a repeat of last year's award, for $200. Bob Johnson is Haxtun's band instructor.

Corn Festival planners Margo Kroeger and Colleen Lockwood have booked some new events. Miss Colorado, Colleen Walker will make an appearance. The Westernaires Precisionettes consists of 42 girls along with their horses. They will be in the parade and give an hour performance in the afternoon.

The Colorado University Buffaloes cheerleaders have agreed to come with a dance team of ten and the team's mascot, Chip. The C.U. Buff football team will accompany them if the team has no practice that day. To help ensure no practice, they also invited Buffs' coach Bill McCartney.

It's official! The Haxtun Community Childcare Center is fully licensed and will open its doors on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The HCCC passed final inspection from the State last week.

Erica Brady is the new face of Phillips County Economic Development. She took over PCED's Executive Director position as of Monday, Aug. 29 and is ready to start building relationships with local business owners.
