Oct. 7, 1936

According to W.J. Henderson, Extension plant pathologist, Phillips County farmers are losing a great deal more in producing smutted wheat than the cost of seed treatment. During the first 30 days of the 1936 shipping period, three carloads of smutted wheat were shipped from Phillips County. Henderson, in cooperation with A.F. Hoffman, county extension agent, will plant a test plot this month showing control of smut by seed treatment methods. Treatments included will be formaldehyde, carbon carbonate, and Ceresan.

The first frost of the season visited this section Wednesday morning. The corn is believed to be in good condition and husking will likely start within two weeks.

H.R. Meakins, who has been associated with Max Williams in the City Meat Market at Haxtun since last July, became the sole owner of the business last Saturday when he purchased the interest of Mr. Williams. The market was opened the first of this year by Mr. Williams and sold to Mr. Meakins. The latter will be assisted in the store by his son, Herbert, and also by another son, Earl, who will move here from Longmont in the near future.

70 Years Ago

Oct. 10, 1951

Miss Betty Johnson and Miss Mary McCarry, Haxtun school teachers, are absent from their duties this week due to an automobile accident. Enroute to Denver over the weekend, they turned their car over 21 miles west of Fort Morgan and were both thrown from the car. Miss McCarry suffered bruises, and an x-ray showed a crushed vertebrae in her neck. Miss Johnson was less severely injured, although she incurred a broken thumb and a chipped ankle bone.

Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Petre will leave Nov. 1 for a two-week trip to Havana, Cuba. The Petres will be guests of the refrigerator and home freezer division of the International Harvester Company. The trip is an all-expense paid trip won by Mr. Petre over 58 other dealers in the Cheyenne district.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer Silvey returned to Haxtun Tuesday from Grant City, Mo., where they had been called by the illness and death of Mr. Silvey's mother, Mrs. C.W. Silvey.

Word was received in Haxtun Thursday of the death of Glenn Waterman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Waterman of Sterling and nephew of Louis Waterman and Mrs. Barney Buss of Haxtun. He was in the Army and was located in Korea at the time of his death. No details have been received by the family except the telegram stating he had been killed.

Oct. 7, 1976

Bryce Hill and Brett Salvador won first-place team honors in FFA crops judging at NJC last week. Kevin Constance, Norm Tanner and Tim Freemyer won first in land classification. Randy Widgery and Damon Lundgren won second place in the agricultural mechanics contest. Bill Renzelman and Todd Smith competed in dairy judging last Saturday. Dennis Holcomb, Chad Fix, and Dallas Reyher were members of the livestock judging team also.

Death: Rickard Ross, 80, retired farmer, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1976.

The Haxtun and Holyoke fire departments teamed up the fires near Paoli this past week, first on Saturday at the Marvin James farm about 10 miles south of Paoli where a cornfield had caught fire. A truck backfire was blamed for the blaze. On Monday firemen were called to the home of Mrs. Mabel Grieser, two miles north and two miles east of Paoli. A garage there was completely destroyed by flames.

Mr. and Mrs. R. Wayne Wertz of Fleming will observe their 25th wedding anniversary at an open house reception on Sunday. They are the parents of Cynthia Shareen and Sheila. They have one grandson, Jon David.

Oct. 10, 1991

A traffic accident near Greeley claimed the life of former Fleming resident Jacquelyn Nab, 34, Sept. 29, 1991.

Despite a nip of fall in the air, one of the largest crowds in recent years packed Haxtun's main street on Saturday morning to watch the 70th Annual Corn Festival parade. The CU cheerleaders and mascot Chip were scheduled to be in the parade by car trouble caused them to be late. They did, however, sho up in time to enjoy some of the street games and other events. According to Margo Kroeger, the cheerleaders got in on the egg toss and the three-legged race. "They just couldn't believe they would have as much fun as they had in our little town," said Kroeger.

When the mail bags came aboard the U.S.S. McKee stationed in the Persian Gulf, they were often filled with letters from Haxtun. "They would give Craig and me the ones from this community and then spread among the other guys," says Guernsey, who with brother Craig served as grand marshal for Haxtun's Corn Festival. One group of letters Jeff especially remembers came from Haxtun second graders.

Sept. 28, 2001

Members of the Fleming Town Council discussed findings from a financial audit conducted by Scott Szabo during a meeting on Monday, Sept. 19. Szabo reported a deficit of more than $62,000 and talked to council members about the importance of increasing utility rates each year.

The Haxtun Bulldogs claimed their first league victory Friday night with a 40-12 hammering of the Longmont Christian Warriors. The win gives the Bulldogs an overall 4-0 record on the season.

The Fleming Wildcats traveled to Weldona for a Saturday afternoon game against the Weldon Valley Warriors last week. Fleming handed Weldon Valley their first league loss of the season while holding onto their perfect league record of 2-0. The Wildcats stand at 4-0 overall on the season.
