GOING AROUND the right end for a Bulldog touchdown was Jim Switzer on the quarterback keeper. Although Haxtun got on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter, Wray went on to win the game 13-6 over the Bulldogs.

65 Years Ago

Oct. 28, 1936

Friends and relatives were shocked to learn the news last week of the death of Roy Burnett, 47, which occured last Wednesday night at his home near Chicago, Ill. Injuries that he received in an automobile accident on Sept. 3 proved fatal to Mr. Burnett. With his wife and sons, Roy visited his mother, his brother Paul, and other relatives at Haxtun for several weeks this fall.

In the interest of public health and sanitation, and for the prevention of contagious diseases, Dr. W.E. Mooney, city health officer, has issued a warning. Some suggestions: Children should have windows open in sleeping rooms. Keep your feet dry at all times. Parents who have rubbish, ashes, and litter in the backyards are asked to consult the city marshal at once. He will help you to get the unsanitary and unsightly premises cleaned up quickly at special reduced rates for the next ten days.


The finest Chevrolets in the company's quarter-century of automobile manufacture will make their bow here and throughout the country on Nov. 7, O.K. Clark, of the Clark Chevrolet Company announced this week. The new models adhere closely to time-tried Chevrolet engineering principles but combine great power, economy, safety and durability with striking new beauty.

Oct. 31, 1951

The rural fire department was called out Thursday to the Gene Shannep farm to put out a grass fire that was burning dangerously near the house. The fire was extinguished before any damage was done.

Mr. and Mrs. George McCulloch entertained at dinner Sunday. Their guests were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Meakins of Fowler, Miss Jean Thornhill, and Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Meakins.


Carl Etl, Mrs. Wallace Burton and Kent were guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Riter and his mother, Mrs. Anna Riter in Bursh Tuesday. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Les Nicholson of San Francisco, Calif., and Ralph Nicholson of Julesburg.

Miss Glendora Lindgren, who is attending nurses' school in Denver, came to Haxtun Friday evening on the bus to spend the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lindgren. She was taken back to Denver Sunday afternoon by her parents.

Mrs. Rosemary Noll was a bus passenger for Holyoke Tuesday noon.

A baby daughter, Denise Yvette, was born Sunday to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Kipp. She weighed six pounds and nine ounces.


The hospital wishes to thank the following people for food donations: Hobert Richards of Sterling and Dean Garrett of Haxtun for ducks; Mrs. Alice Dillehay and Mrs. Ella Minert for jelly, jam, and pickles; and L.F. Einspahr for 12 dozen eggs.

Emma Schoen of Haxtun is pictured with four of her great-grandchildren, three of who she saw for the first time on her recent trip to Idaho. They are Matthew Dean, 3 years, and Amy Adele, 6 months, children of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schuster of Plymouth, Idaho; Joshua, 10 months, son of Rev. and Mrs. Gary Rahe of Holyoke; and LeAnn Carol, 22 months, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Schuster of New Plymouth.


Haxtun students Doug Reyher and Carol Frank are officers of Phi Beta Lambda at Northeaster Junior College. Reyher is president and Miss Frank is activities board member. Kendra Kinzie is also an officer.

Fleming News - Mrs. Keith Nelson was pleasantly surprised Wednesday evening when relatives gathered bringing in pizza and cake to help her celebrate her birthday. Present were Keith Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Earle Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Nelson and Chris and Brett, Elen and Gary Nelson.

Oct. 31, 1991

Haxtun's Lady Bulldogs advance to regional play this Friday after beating out three of four competitors in the district volleyball action last week. Haxtun ended in second place behind the Merino Lady Rams. Players named in stats: Beth Wernsman, Dana Salvador, Crisa McClain, Becky Braun, Amanda Seger, Jennifer Waite and Paige Fuesz.


Baby, it's cold outside: Tempuratures dropped into the high teens on Monday as winter's first storm dropped freezing rain, sleet and snow over the area, following a weekend of pleasant fall weather.

Haxtun's fightin' Bulldogs pounded the Kiowa Indians to a 42-6 victory in preliminary football playoffs on Saturday. The win notches number 30 for the hometown team and place them in quarterfinals next Saturday against the Maranatha Crusaders of Arvada. Listed in stats: Rod Workman, Darin Smith, Devin Newth, Sam Yost, Ian Harms, James Ramey, Sean Gillotte, Nathan Prottsman, Justin McDaniel, Alan Eckman, Travis Allen, Ryan Michael, Roger Olson, Michael Davis, Chad Bamford, Justin Lett, Tyler Knode, Mike McClain, Rob Steinman, Jamie Lueth, Jason Schmidt, Mark Salvador, Damon Fetzer, and Damion Mosher.

The Haxtun TC will now have authority to issue special event permits for the sale of malt, spirituous or vinous liquor to qualifying organizations under the Colorado Revised Statutes. The most recent request for such a license to the Town of Haxtun was from the Haxtun Chamber of Commerce for the beer garden at the 2010 and 2011 Corn Festivals.
