October 27, 2021

The Fleming Wildcat volleyball and football teams remain in top-10 positions in Colorado High School Activities Association rankings and in ratings percentage index standings following court and field action last week.

The Lady Wildcats, who hold the second spot in CHSAA rankings and RPI standings, competed in several matches last week, the first of which took place at Idalia last Friday where they swept the Lady Wolves. Idalia entered as the top competitor in their league at 14-4 overall. They fell in sets one through three by tallies of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-18.

On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats took the court in Sterling in tournament action with the Sterling Lady Tigers, the Wiggins Lady Tigers, the Lamar Lady Savages and the Denver Christian Lady Thunder — all 2A and 3A squads.

Fleming suffered a loss in their first match on Saturday to 3A’s 12th ranked Sterling Lady Tigers. The hosting squad took the best-of-three match in two sets, 25-20 and 25-15.

The Lady Wildcats followed up with a win over Wiggins. The Lady Tigers, who hold the seventh RPI spot in 2A action, took set one 25-21, and fell in the following two, 25-17 and 15-11.

The local ladies played a close match with the Lamar Lady Savages. The second ranked 3A team defeated Fleming by just four and five points in two sets, 25-21 and 25-20.

Fleming came out victorious in their final match of the Sterling tournament with a win over 2A’s number 11 — the Denver Christian Lady Thunder. The Lady Wildcats swept the match 25-17 and 25-14.

As of Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, the Lady Wildcats were listed in 1A’s number two spot in CHSAA’s RPI standings. The Briggsdale Lady Falcons sat in the top slot.

Fleming is set to play at Merino on Thursday, Oct. 28 to close out the regular season. Merino currently stands at number five in 1A rankings with losses to Sedgwick County, Wiggins, Haxtun and Lamar.

The Fleming Wildcat football team suffered their second loss of the season on Friday night at Idalia. Idalia entered at 5-2 on the year with losses to Granada and Stratton — CHSAA’s second and third RPI ranked teams, respectively. The Wolves and Wildcats sit in the fourth and fifth spots in RPI rankings.

Friday’s game opened with Idalia on top by six, 14-8. A couple scoreless quarters for the Wildcats paired with a Wolf touchdowns in the second and third put the local team down 26-8 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

The Wildcats made their best offensive showing of the game in the fourth quarter — adding two TDs with extra points for 16. The Wolves would add another six in the fourth and the score closed with the Wildcats down by eight, 32-24.

Individual stats for the volleyball and football teams were not available as of press time.

The Wildcat squad returns to their home field to close out the regular season on Saturday. They’re set to take on the Cheraw Wolverines at 1 p.m.

Cheraw enters at 6-3 on the year. They finished third in their league behind Cheyenne Wells and Granada and currently hold the seventh spot in CHSAA’s RPI standings.
