85 Years Ago

Dec. 2, 1936

Miss Evelyn Waters of Wray and Joseph Intermill were married on Wednesday evening of last week at Aurora. The young people were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Strickland of Haxtun. They returned to Haxtun Friday. After a short visit here, the newlyweds left for Eckley, where they will make their home. The couple made another brief visit to Haxtun Sunday evening, being brought here by a charivari crowd.

The marriage of Miss Bernice Finnigsmier, former Haxtun girl, and Wayne Forrest of Hay Springs, Neb., occurred last Saturday evening in Denver. The ceremony was performed at eight o'clock in St. Peter's Evangelical Church. Following a wedding trip to the Black Hills, the young couple will be at home at 815 East 18th Avenue in Denver.

Miss Marcella Carpenter entertained a number of young ladies at the home of Mrs. C.E. Olson Monday. The party was a birthday supper in honor of Miss Carpenter's birthday anniversary. The guests were Jean Beckman, Marian Ullrich, Alice Hadeen, Shirley Sack, Nelda Corder, Ruth and Sylvia Fuesz, Della Bell and Aileen Riley.

Dec. 2, 1951

C.P. Larson, 91, long-time resident of the Haxtun community, passed away at the Brush hospital Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 5, 1951) following an illness of several weeks. He came to the United States from Sweden at the age of 21 and first settled in Minnesota, later moving to Iowa. He came to Haxtun around 1884.

Pvt. and Mrs. Duane Orth are the parents of a baby daughter born Tuesday, Nov. 29, 1951. She has been named Sandra Kay. Duane is the son of Henry Orth and is stationed at Indianapolis, Ind., where he is attending school.


Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. Austin Bledsoe and boys attended the family reunion held at the home of Elno Hagemeier Thanksgiving. There were about 30 of the Hagemeier family present.

The communicable disease report for Phillips County for the month of November, as released by the Northeast Colorado Health Department, was chicken pox, 19, strep sore throat, one, and virus Hepatitis, two.

Clarkville News - Mr. and Mrs. Junior Goodman entertained Mr. and Mrs. Harry B. Radford Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brazelton, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Salvador, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Reyher, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Schnieder, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Myers, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hunt at canasta club last Friday evening.

Dec. 2, 1976

Dana Kelly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Kelly and member of the Colorado State University Singers, will be performing with the group when they sing with the Denver Symphony Orchestra on Dec. 6 and 7. They will be singing "The Childhood of Christ" by Berlioz, with Brian Priestman conducting.

Obituary: Lyle Vincent Atkins, 70, Nov. 28, 1976.

Nine area high school football players were named to the Lower Platte Athletic Association all-conference football team in the north division for the 1976 season. Named to the offensive team: Max Fetzer, guard, Haxtun; Lynn Dreier, tackle, Haxtun; and Brian Biesemeier, back, Haxtun. On the defensive squad: Bob Henry, lineman, Haxtun; Larry Wilson, end, Haxtun; Bob Deines, linebacker, Fleming; Bryce Hill, linebacker, Haxtun; and Dave Kelly, defensive back, Haxtun. Steve Sharpe and Tim Carper of Haxtun, and Steve Boerner, Gary Nelson, Tracy Plog, Kent Stephens, Steve Unrein and Bob Vandenbark, Fleming, were given honorable mention.


Fleming News - Janell Kinzie, who is attending CU Law School in Boulder, spent the weekend with the Bud Kinzies.

Dec. 5, 1991

Former U.S. Ambassador Sam Zakhem of Lakewood today announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination of the U.S. Senate in 1992.

Janice Bjorklun, Haxtun town clerk, received special recognition for demonstrating excellence in the Municipal Clerks' Profession. She was nominated for the honor by Sharon Gay McDaniel, Haxtun's mayor pro-tem.

Senior Colorado State runner Sandy Ham finished 10th overall in the NCAA National Cross-Country Championships in Tucson, Ariz., to become the first-ever Ram female runner to win all-America cross-country honors. Ham, from Haxtun, ran the 5,000-meter race in 17:02.1.


Members of Doane College alumni donors recently elected Keith and Fran Gilliland of Haxtun to serve a three-year term on the groups' alumni council.

Obituary: Walter E. Pugh, 72, former Holyoke resident, died Nov. 14, 1991, in Arlington, Texas.

Mark Gueck joined the Haxtun Board of Education, taking his oath of office during a meeting Nov. 15. Gueck and incumbents Amy Kilgour, Mike Salyards and Richard Starkebaum begin a new four-year term on the BOE and join fellow members Chuck Dvorak, Dave Gibson and Larry Wilson. Gueck replaces Darlene Widgery, who served one term and chose to not run for a second.


With just over 20 days left until Christmas, Haxtun and Fleming residents have two opportunities in the coming days to get some shopping done while supporting local businesses. Haxtun's Country Christmas is set for Tuesday, Dec. 6 and Fleming's Simply Christmas celebration is to take place on Saturday, Dec. 10. Both promise shopping for adults and fun for children.

Music and excitement, along with a near capacity crowd filled the Haxtun Church of the Brethren on Sunday, Nov. 20 as the congregation and visitors gathered for the ordination of Co-Pastor Ken Frantz. A trombone quartet joined pianist Eula Frantz and organist Connie Waite to fill the sanctuary and pews with oft mellow, but more often jubilant music throughout the celebration. Quartet members included Frantz, Fleming; Larry Kitzel, Arriba; Sarah Vogel, Sterling and Scott Kimble, Limon.
