With plenty of live targets available, hunters brought to an end one of the largest rabbit hunts ever to be held in this territory last Thursday. It was estimated that from 5,000 to 8,000 rabbits were killed during two organized drives, enough to fill several trucks.

S.J. Meakins, John Sandquist, R. Ewegen, and Arthur Falk, Phillips County Commissioners, returned home last Thursday from Peoria, Ill., where they had been guests of Caterpiller Tractor Company on a trip to the factory.

With a light snowstorm, corn shelling is at a standstill at the present time. Local elevators report that only a small amount of corn is being received. A great deal of corn is being held on the farms, however, with some of the grain being placed in bins and much of it remaining in piles to be shelled at a later time.

County Line News - A birthday surprise was held at the home of John Wirth in honor of Mrs. Frank Bjorklun. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. August Bjorklun, Laurence Bjorklun, Mr. and Mrs. George Michael and Leonard, Mrs. Bill Jensen, Mrs. Fred Woodham, Mrs. Walter Eckman, Mrs. Carl Eckman and daughter, Mrs. C. Ricker, Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Mattson, Mrs. Frank Austin, Charley Kayser, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Young and family, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anderson, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bjorklun and daughter.

Hospital News - Pat Hall, daughter of Mrs. Horace DePew, received treatment for a frozen hand.

Christmas dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Ferguson were Mr. and Mrs. Keith Knode and son, Mr. and Mrs. Gordie Knode, and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Knode and children.


The Haxtun grade school boys' quartet of Larry Orth, Clyde Ruch, John Buck, and Carl Cheramy sang "Winter Wonderland" over station KGEK, Sterling, on Christmas morning. Mrs. Dorothy Lane, grade school music teacher, was their accompanist.

Gordon Thomas, who is in the Navy and stationed at Tennessee, arrived home Saturday to spend the Christmas holidays with his mother, Mrs. Verna Decker, and his brother Roger.

Fairfield News - J.N. Skold was able to return home from the Haxtun hospital Saturday after a stay of two weeks. On Christmas Eve, his children Gladys Bjorklun, Mrs. Clyde Jeffers and family, Lloyd and family were at his place for supper.

Mrs. R.V. Exstrom was a Christmas dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. McKellar. She was pleasantly suprised that evening by a phone call from her son Stuart at Sacramento, Calif., who called to wish her a happy holiday season.

Dec. 26, 1991

Keith and Fran Gilliland attended the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbon in Hawaii. Gilliland, a Navy fighter pilot in World War II, was not at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. "But we were there a lot of times after that," said Gilliland.

Children taking part in "the very first ever Christmas-a-thon" in Haxtun at the Church of the Brethren were Zeb Lambert, Kyle Sampson, Sheena Irish, Freddie Kinzie, Ashley Ruch, Danny Yost, Senaida Kinzie, Todd Sampson, Sara Yost, Matt Geier, and Cara Munday. Cindy Kipp and Ann Yost directed the program.

Clyde Hogsett, retired Department of Ag employee, is pictured with one of his latest creations. A recipe-card holder that also plays music when opened.

The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs faced off with two tough last week, suffering loss to the Caliche Buffaloes and Sedgwick County Cougars.

The Haxtun Bulldogs moved to 2-2 on the season after picking up a win over the Sedgwick County Cougars Friday night in Julesburg. The Bulldogs suffered a close, four-point loss to the Caliche Buffaloes the night before.
