December 15, 2021

The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs recorded their first win of the season Saturday night with a 55-47 win over the Caliche Buffaloes. The Lady Bulldogs picked up the eight-point win on their court in front of a home crowd. Week three rankings keep Haxtun in the seventh seed in all of Colorado 1A girls’ basketball action.

“The girls came out strong and really wanted a win,” Head Coach Arlan Scholl said. “We played a great floor game, but a few of our shots around the basket just would not go in and Caliche got hot and hit some outside shots so the game stayed fairly close throughout. In the end though, our girls just outworked Caliche and we continued to fight and bring home the win.”

The Lady Bulldogs put up 17 points in the first quarter and held the Lady Buffs to just nine points in the second while adding 14 to the board to hold a 31-24 advantage at half time. Scoring slowed for the home team in the third, the Lady Bulldog managing just four points, but it all came down to a hot fourth quarter as Haxtun scored 20 points to claim the 55-47 win.

Three Haxtun seniors contributed double-digits Saturday night. Taylor Schram connected with six two-point shots, one three-pointer and sunk one at the charity stripe for a total of 16 against the Buffs. Allie Thompson made six twos and one free-throw for 13 points followed by K’lyn Bornhoft with 12. Bornhoft made three shots inside the paint, one three and sunk three free-throws to earn her 12.

Thompson and Schram each recorded double-digits in the rebound category as well. Thompson earned a total of 20, 14 on offense and six on defense. Schram brought down 12 splitting evenly with six on each side of the ball. Cassidy Goddard pulled down eight rebounds followed by Bobbi Starkebaum and Bornhoft, each with six.

The night before, Haxtun took to the road for a contest in Julesburg with the Sedgwick County Lady Cougars. The Lady Bulldogs put up nine points in the first, trailing the home team by just one at the end of the quarter. The second quarter evened things out as this time the Lady Bulldogs added 10 points while holding the home team to just nine. The board read 19 all at the half.

The second half was more of a struggle as the Lady Bulldogs had a hard time getting the ball to drop through the hoop. Sedgwick County went on to claim a 56-35 win over Haxtun.

“We played a very competitive first half of basketball with Sedgwick County and then our offensive attack just couldn’t continue to match theirs,” Scholl said. “We worked hard on defense, but just could not get enough to keep the game within the reach.”

Schram led the scoring department with 14 points in Julesburg. She connected with four two-point shots and two three pointers to earn her team high. Bornhoft registered eight points from one three and two baskets inside the paint. She also made one of two shots from the free-throw line for her eight. Cassidy Goodwin and Thompson each added six points to the board in Julesburg.

Goodwin and Goddard led the team in rebounds. Goodwin pulled down seven on offense and two on defense for a total of nine. Goddard earned eight total, three on offense and five on defense.

This week Haxtun traveled for a match up with the Holyoke Lady Dragons on Tuesday night. The Lady Dragons held a 3-1 record entering the contest. Results were not available as of press time. On Thursday, the Lady Bulldogs are set to host the Lady Warriors from Dalton, Neb. Game time in Haxtun is set for 4 p.m. on Thursday.
