HAXTUN LADY BULLDOG Cassidy Goddard, #24, puts up a jump shot in a home contest with Merino opening weekend of basketball action.

The Lady Bulldogs enter Christmas break with a 25-point win over the Lady Warriors from Leyton, Neb. Haxtun picked up their second win at home Thursday night and will break from play until action resumes just after the first of the year.

Offensively, the Lady Bulldogs came out hot against Leyton, putting 14 points on the board in just the first quarter. Haxtun added 22 in the second to hold a 36-9 advantage at half time.

Scoring in the third quarter was much the same as the Lady Bulldogs upped the score by 12. On the defensive end, Haxtun held the Lady Warriors to just five points following the half-time break. The home town Lady Bulldogs went on to roll to a 55-30 win.

"The Leyton team is a young team with some very talented players. Our size and playing experience was just a little too much for them to handle," Head Coach Arlan Scholl said. "I was pleased with our team's execution and we were also able to get some of our younger players some valuable varsity experience."

Three Lady Bulldog starters earned double-digits in the scoring department Thursday night. Allie Thompson put up 21 points; she connected with 10 two-point field goals and one free throw for her 21. Taylor Schram registered 16 points, she earned hers from seven two-point shots and two at the charity stripe. Cassidy Goddard contributed 10 for the Lady Bulldogs, earning hers from field goals inside the three-point line.

Cassidy Goodwin led under the basket with rebounds. She brought down four on offense and three on offense to lead her team with seven. Goddard and Thompson each pulled down six. Schram registered five rebounds followed by K'lyn Bornhoft with three.

Two nights before, Haxtun took the road just east for a contest with the Lady Dragons in Holyoke. A slow start in the first half left the Lady Bulldogs down by more than 20. A better second half saw 15 points from Haxtun in the third and 20 in the fourth but the Lady Bulldogs suffered a 20-point, 61-41, loss to the Lady Dragons.

Schram and Bornhoft both hit double-digits in Holyoke; Schram led her team with 16 points followed by 10 from Bornhoft. Schram connected with three shots from outside the arc, two inside the three-point line and one free throw for her 16. Bornhoft tallied four two-points shots and two free throws for her 10.

Goddard led under the net with five rebounds; she pulled down two on offense and three on defense. Schram registered four rebounds followed by Thompson and Bobbi Starkebaum, each with three.

"We had a good week of basketball. Traveling to and playing Holyoke was a big challenge and we struggled offensively in the first half, but came out and settled down and executed and shot the ball better in the second half," said Scholl. "This group of players always seem to keep working even when things are not always going their way."

The Lady Bulldogs are set to face off against Yuma and Prairie in their first outing back from Christmas break. They will travel to take on the Lady Indians in Yuma on Jan. 7. The next day, the team will be on the road again when they take on Prairie.

According to MaxPreps, Yuma entered Christmas break with an overall 4-2 record. Prairie holds a 2-3 record this far in the season.

Week four rankings on Colorado Preps lists Briggsdale as the number one team in 1A. Haxtun holds the 10th slot.
