Wildcats return from break to gain a pair
January 12, 2022
A two-weekend holiday hiatus gave the Fleming Wildcats some much needed momentum to bounce back from the 1-4 record that opened their 2021-22 season. The Wildcats returned to the court last weekend to pick up a pair of wins over Merino and Kit Carson to advance to 3-4 overall.
The 2022 portion of the season opened at Merino on Friday night, Jan. 7, where the Wildcats faced off with the then 3-2 Rams. Fleming jumped to an early eight-point lead, but fell behind in the second and trailed by four at the half.
The Wildcats stepped up in the third to take a two-point lead over the home team and expanded that lead by one before the final horn. Fleming took the three-point road win, 49-46.
Junior forward Harry Harms earned his second career double-double on the night making him the MaxPreps player of the game. He put 10 points on the scoreboard and led the squad in rebounds with 12 split at six offensive and six defensive.
Senior Joel Muller led on the scoreboard with 13 points in the contest. He shot a perfect game from the field going five-for-five in two-point shots and made three of four from the free-throw line.
Junior Kolten Houser matched Harms' 10 on the scoreboard. He put in five two-point shots. Houser also followed Muller under the net in rebounds with eight total. He brought down one offensive and seven defensive boards.
Night number two of the weekend's action brought the Kit Carson Wildcats to Fleming's home court. Kit Carson entered at 1-5 and dropped to 1-6 after Saturday's action.
Fleming held just a three-point advantage after the opening quarter, but widened that gap to 10 by the close of the half, 32-22. They continued to outscore the visiting Wildcats in the third and fourth quarters and the score settled at 58-37.
Houser led on the scoreboard for the night with 16 points. He sunk one three-point shot, six two-pointers and a free throw. He was also a leading contributor in rebounds with seven; three of those offensive and four defensive.
Harms led the Wildcats in rebounds with eight. He grabbed three offensive and five defensive boards.
Muller tacked 14 on the Wildcats' side of the scoreboard for the night. He sunk two of three three-point shots for six, earned six points off two-point buckets and went 100 percent from the free-throw line for another pair.
Junior Blake Feather also hit double digits in the contest. He went 80 percent on two-point shots for eight and shot 100 percent from the charity stripe for the remaining two.
Junior Braylen Feather was named the MaxPreps player of the game against Kit Carson. He contributed seven points and four rebounds in addition to three assists, a pair of steals, five blocks and three deflections.
The Wildcats are set for Thursday/Friday contests this week. Lone Star is on Thursday's agenda for an at-home contest. The Longhorns enter at 1-7 on the season. That game will follow girls' varsity action around 7 p.m.
On Friday, Jan. 14, Fleming heads to Stratton to face off with the 2-3 Eagles. Games that day are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
