85 Years Ago

Jan. 27, 1937

Mrs. E. (Caroline Kolb) Bamford, 67, one of the oldest residents of the Haxtun community, passed away last Thursday (Jan. 21, 1937) at her home in Dailey.

A new business firm, handling the John Deere line of farm machinery, will be opened at Haxtun this eek by Lamb and Lamb of Proctor. The business will be located in the Donaldson building on main street and will be under the management of W.C. Meink.

Vern Abner Dunbar and Arvid Glen Wedin, Haxtun, and Clara Alice Mock and Wayne Hubert Mock, Dailey, all students at the University of Colorado, were on the honor roll for the fall quarter.

Mrs. Ray Phillips entertained with a surprise dinner last Sunday in honor of Mr. Phillips' birthday anniversary. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. Albert Miller and daughter Miss Vada, Mrs. Minnie Mattson and daughters Ardel and LaVerna of Holyoke, Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Thornhill and children, and William Markt.

Jan. 30, 1952

Mrs. Dave (Agnes Amelia Berg) Johnson, 67, aged pioneer resident, passed away Friday (Jan. 25, 1952), at the Boulder sanitarium where she had been a patient only a few days. Nephew and nieces are Lloyd Skold, Mrs. Mildred Williams, Mrs. Gladys Bjorklun, and Mrs. Mildred Jeffers.

Fleming News - The piano pupils of Mrs. Bud Kinzie presented a recital Sunday afternoon. Pupils: Sherrilyn Barkley, Elaine Harms, Joyce Uhler, Larry Barkley, Darrell Balinger, Leota Harms, Diana Barkley, and Zoe Atkins.

One of the largest crowds ever to assemble at the high school auditorium was presented Friday night when top-ranking Fleming basketball team met the Haxtun Bulldogs in a game that was a thriller from start to finish and ended in a Bulldog victory, 58-52. The victory ties the two teams for first place in conference standing. Holyoke is on the second rung.


45 Years Ago

Jan. 27, 1977

Barb's Hair Affair opened its doors for business on Dec. 15. Barb Ensminger is the owner. Nancie Olson and Cathy Hill are the other operators. They will be hosting a grand opening celebration on Jan. 31.

Dave Huson, 45, became Haxtun's chief of police in December. Huson brings 16 years of law enforcement experience with him. His wife Marylin is presently teaching kindergarten in Otis and plans to move to Haxtun in the immediate future.

Steve Sharpe flies through the air on his way to another two points. He scored 16 points against Wiggins to help the Haxtun Bulldogs in an 82-75 win Friday evening.


Charges of first-degree murder have been filed in Phillips County District Court against Toribio Tonche Sr. of Sterling. Tonche, 48, is charged with the strangulation death of Mrs. Barbara Brown in her Haxtun home the night of Jan. 12.

Mike Miller, Paoli, captured a calf in the annual Future Farmers of America Heifer Wrangle. There were 16 contestants for eight calves.

The Church of the Brethren of Haxtun was the setting for the Oct. 23 wedding of Mary Ann Schropfer and Duane Edwards.

Jan. 20, 1992

Snowball royalty crowned at Fleming School recently are pictured: Clarissa Lousberg and Jerry Wisdom, freshmen attendants; Matt Monroe and Kim Wisdom, king and queen; Matt Moorman and Candi Mekelburg, junior attendants.


After 78 years nestled on the corner of County Road 91 and Scott Street in Dailey, the Dailey Cash Store left for its new home in Sterling, where it became part of the village at the Overland Trail Museum.

Harold and Vickie Hadeen visited in Fort Collins on Friday and Saturday. They were guests in the home of Greg and Mary Ditter and Shane, Tara and Micah.

Fleming kindergarteners who are studying North and South Poles under Jean Bauder are Tonya Headdy, Sarah Beck, Darin Hershfeldt, Brandy Frahm, Ben Wolever, Carrie Schaefer, Ryan Einspahr, Lauryn Etl, Danny Powell, Brian Powell, and Carrie Krier.

1991 junior high Fleming Wildcat football team members were undefeated in their season. Team members: Lon Comstock, Tim Brekel, Jeremy Miller, Rick Barkley, Josh Wyrsch, Chad Brekel, Ben Wyrsch, Bill Nelson, and Joey Neel. Coach is Todd White with Dan Hershfeldt as his assistant.

Fleming's senior Class of 2012 is heading to Estes Park for a four-day senior trip in March. The Fleming Board of Education approved the senior trip during a short, half-hour meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Mark and Sara Grauberger, Sterling, announce the birth of their son, Mason Allen Grauberger, at 2:09 a.m. on Jan. 13, 2012 at Sterling Regional MedCenter.

The Fleming Lady Wildcats went 1-1 in basketball action over the past week taking a home loss to the Caliche Lady Buffaloes and a road win over the Prairie Lady Mustangs.
