Frenchman BOE receives three letters of interest

Three Fleming community members have submitted letters of interest to fill a vacancy on the Frenchman Board of Education. The vacancy comes following the resignation of Nick Wernsman, who no longer lives in district lines, disqualifying him from serving on the local school board.

Sam Wolever, Jr., Shane Schliesser and Matt Johnson all wrote and submitted letters of interest to serve on the Board in Fleming. Board members reviewed the letters of interest during a recent February meeting. Each interested individual will be interviewed during a school board work session slated for early March. Plans are to appoint one of the three in a regular board meeting later in March.

Johnson and Wolever would be new appointments to the local school board. Schliesser has served as a board member in the past, just recently choosing to not run for another term when his seat expired last November. He has filled a number of roles on the Board, including officer positions.

During the meeting last month, Superintendent Steve McCracken announced the receipt of an Early Childhood grant for the preschool program in Fleming. He said the District also received additional funding from the Supply Chain Assistance Fund.

McCracken said plans are to use grant funds to help improve and renovate the preschool classroom including new carpeting and cabinets.

“In addition, we will use a portion of the funds for preschool staff salaries,” he said.

High School Business Teacher Rylie Salyards presented to board members at the start of the meeting. Board members invite staff members to regular monthly meetings to include each teacher throughout the year. Time with teachers is spent communicating how things are going in the classroom as well as to discuss any other needs as they arise.

Salyards said her students work to publish the Cat Chat publication and the Fleming Focus. She also noted that 33 Fleming students qualified for State FBLA which will be held at the Gaylord Resort in mid-April. She said 15 teams who participated at the District FBLA contest placed first.

Amy Brekel, Fleming’s third grade teacher, also presented to the Board. She said her 13 students recently celebrated 2sday with activities to celebrate Feb. 2, 2022. Brekel thanked the Board for the recent opportunity to attend a Colorado literacy conference in Denver.

Board members also spent time hiring staff members to fill vacant coaching positions for spring sports. Leo Mekelberg was hired as the Head Golf Coach for girls’ golf and Bailey Chintala was approved as the Junior High Assistant Track Coach.

The Board approved hiring Jaxon King as the High School Baseball Head Coach and Tanner Serrato as his Assistant.

In other business:

• Approved an invoice for HVAC repairs with Trane for $5,201;

• Approved the 2022-2024 contract for Superintendent McCracken, no changes were made to his contract;

• Ratified the decision to cancel school on Feb. 2 for inclement weather;

• Approved the 2022-23 school calendar;

• Amended the extra duty salary schedule to add the golf coach and assistant junior high track position.
