Mother Nature continues to wreak havoc on the spring sports schedules, with more track meets and baseball games canceled last week. However, a number of contests were able to go on as scheduled, even if conditions were less than ideal.

Fort Morgan ran its mark to 4-0 with three victories last week. The Mustangs dominated Niwot 14-6 last Tuesday, overcoming an early 2-0 hole. They were the beneficiary of 18 walks by Cougar pitchers. That was followed up by a pair of 1-0 wins, the first over the same Niwot squad the following day as Frank Ortega gave up five hits and struck out nine over 6.1 innings to pick up the win.

The Mustangs then took the victory over rival Brush on Friday, with Collin Farley, who had earned the save on Wednesday, went the distance, striking out seven, allowing six hits and no walks. He also drove in the only run of the game. Three Beetdigger pitchers combined to allow one hit in the contest.

Brush evened its record the following afternoon, taking a 12-0 victory at home against Platte Valley. Braxton Shelton, Jayce Kreegar and Ty Griffith each drove in three runs, with Shelton hitting his first home run of the season. The Beetdiggers only allowed two hits and one walk, while their offense benefited from seven Bronco walks and five errors.

La Junta won its opener on Tuesday of last week, taking a 5-2 decision over Trinidad on the road. The Tigers got two hits apiece from Jeremiah Martinez and Anthony Torres, while Steven Salas drove in two runs. Salas also took the win, allowing an unearned run over five innings, with 10 strikeouts.

Lamar went 2-2 over the weekend, as the Savages participated in a tournament in Pueblo. They dropped a 2-0 contest to Pueblo Central in the opener on Friday, but responded with a 19-0 victory over Greeley Central with Coy Spitz driving in four runs and Erik Aguilar scattering six hits over five innings to gain the win.

The Savages made it two straight in the win column as they opened Saturday with a 5-3 thriller over Pueblo South. Lamar scored three in the top of the sixth to come from behind in the contest. Only one of the three runs allowed was earned. Lamar dropped a 7-4 decision to The Classical Academy to wrap up the event.

Most of the smaller school action that got in last week was played in the tournament co-hosted by Fowler and Rocky Ford. Limon made some serious noise in the tournament, picking up lopsided wins over Dayspring Christian (13-4) and Rocky Ford (14-0), before handing defending 1A champion Holly a 9-1 loss on Saturday. The Badgers blew things open with five runs in the top of the sixth. Keon Bandy drove in three for Limon, while Dakota Eaton scored the lone Wildcat run.

Holly won its first two games of the tournament on Friday, 21-8 over Fowler and 13-3 over Monte Vista. Devin Eaton knocked home four in the win over Fowler. Bryant Manchego homered in that win and Julian Terrazas hit his first of the year in the win over Monte Vista.

Las Animas got out of the gates fast, sweeping a doubleheader over Center, 15-0 and 9-1. TJ Ortiz went 4-4 in the opener, including a triple and a home run, and he added two more hits in the night cap. The sophomore drove in a total of five runs in the twin bill.

An early spring snow storm threatened to wipe out a significant portion of this week's schedule, especially on Monday and Tuesday. If weather permitted, Cheyenne Wells was set to get its season underway on Monday against Simla, while Burlington and Stratton were set to meet up on Tuesday as both teams looked to open their respective seasons with a victory.

Yuma will be the site of an important track meet on Saturday, as teams converge for the Early Qualifier hosted by the Indians. It will mark the first action of the year for last year's 1A Male Athlete of the year, Jacob Jefferson of Arickaree/Woodlin.

Other big meets this weekend will be hosted by Northridge (Greeley) and Lamar. Both of those will also be held on Saturday.

This is also the time of year for all-star basketball contests. Brush's Cesar Hinojos was named MVP of the Biokats Sports Network Northern Colorado All-Star game on Saturday, after he registered 23 points, 21 rebounds, seven steals and a blocked shot. Hinojos cleared the 1,000-point mark for his career during the Patriot League tournament back in late-February.

The Union Pacific League also held its all-league games on Friday of last week and those who made the trip to Byers were treated to a ton of fun, as well as two very competitive contests. Flagler's Madison Crisp hit a dagger three late in the contest to send her White team to the 62-58 victory. In the boys game, Burlington's Keziah Williams drilled a 27-footer to tie the contest at 82, but Dean Kerns, son of Byers boys coach Jeremy Kerns, hit a corner three at the horn to give the White team an 85-82 victory. No stats were taken in either contest.
