Haxtun Bulldogs go 2-1 on the diamond last week; are 7-5 overall

The Haxtun Bulldogs have just three regular season opponents to face in the 2022 spring baseball season. The team currently holds a 7-5 overall record and according to MaxPreps, a 4-3 record in the Lower Platte League. Last week, Haxtun took down Otis on the road and split a double-header with the Rams in Merino.
The Bulldogs jumped to an early 2-1 lead after the first inning of play. Haxtun added another run in the second but in the bottom of that inning, Otis came back to take the advantage with three runs. The home team Bulldogs added two runs in the third to increase the lead but the visiting Haxtun Bulldogs found a groove at home plate and went on to put five runs on the board in the fourth and six in the fifth to not only take the lead but by the contest's largest margin yet. Three additional runs in the seventh inning gave Haxtun a 17-9 win over a fellow 1A team.
Sophomore Kaiden Schelling batted 1.000 in Otis on Thursday. He tallied three runs and two hits from five plate appearances. His accolades also include four runs batted in.
Owen Knode went .667 on the day with three runs and two hits from six plate appearances. He also registered one RBI. Michael Gerk and Keegan Colglazier each batted .500 in Otis. Gerk had three runs and two hits. Colglazier tallied one run and two hits. Both Colglazier and Gerk had an RBI on the day.
Senior Isaac Andersen led in RBIs with a total of five. He had six plate appearances with two runs and one hit including a home run.
The Bulldog team registered 16 stolen bases led by Schelling and Knode, each with four.
A handful of pitchers took the mound Thursday afternoon including Schelling who took the win for Haxtun. He faced nine batters, striking out two. Colglazier also threw from the pitcher's mound, he saw 16 batters and struck out three. Gerk faced 10 batters on the day, striking out one. Braden Plumb struck out one of the five batters he saw at home plate.
Haxtun traveled for the second time in just as many days as they headed to Merino for a Saturday double-header against a top-ranked Rams team. The Bulldogs lost game one 13-3 but came back for a 6-3 win in game two. The first game of the double-header counts towards league and state rankings. Individual stats for the first game were not reported on MaxPreps as of press time.
Ryland Wolff and Owen Knode led in batting averages in the second contest with the Rams; each batting .500. The freshman-senior duo each had one run, one hit and one RBI.
Schelling batted .333 followed by Kyle Fryrear who went .250. Fryrear also registered one RBI. David Avery tallied the team's solo stolen base.
Andersen earned the win from the pitcher's mound for the Bulldogs. He faced 29 batters, striking out one.
This Saturday Haxtun is set to host Wray in double-header action Saturday. Game one is slated to begin at 11 a.m. followed by game two. Next week, the Bulldogs are scheduled to face Holyoke on April 28 and Caliche on the 30th.
