Haxtun Bulldogs pick up a pair of wins against Eagles on Saturday

HAXTUN CATCHER Michael Gerk attempts to tag out Wray's Ashton Rogers at home plate in a double-header between the visiting Bulldogs and the home town Eagles. Haxtun won both games to improve to 9-5 overall.

With two wins in Wray last week the Haxtun Bulldog baseball teams improves to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in league play with the District Tournament just around the corner. According to MaxPreps standings on Tuesday morning, the Bulldogs are currently holding the second seed in 2A/1A Lower Platte League standings. Merino holds the top spot with a 16-2 record overall and a 12-2 standing in league play.

Wray nabbed an early lead in game one Saturday morning with a 2-1 advantage after the first inning. Both teams kept the score even throughout the second with one run from each but the bottom of the third blew things wide open. The Eagles added two runs in the top of the third but Haxtun hit the bats to go onto add nine runs to take the lead and eventually the win. Wray managed just three runs in the fourth. Haxtun took the league-contest win, 11-9.

Individual stats for the first contest against the Eagles last week were not reported on MaxPreps as of press time Tuesday morning.

SOPHOMORE PITCHER Kaiden Schelling fires the ball to home plate in a contest with Wray on the road Saturday. Schelling earned win for the Bulldogs in game two.

Haxtun continued to battle in the second contest of the day. Wray again started out head with one single run in the top of the first for a 1-0 start. The Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the third to gain a 3-1 advantage. Wray managed one single run in the fourth and the Bulldogs added two in the second to end it a 5-2 Bulldogs; giving Haxtun the sweep for the day.

Jerron Turney batted 1.000 in game two. He had two runs and one hit from three plate appearances. Owen Knode, Michael Gerk and Keegan Colglazier all went .333 at the plate. Colglazier led the team with two runs batted in.

Kaiden Schelling earned the win from the pitcher's mound for the Bulldogs. The sophomore struck out three 14 batters and allowed no walks. Turney also took his time on the mound. He struck out five of the 15 batters he saw in game two.

This week Haxtun is set to face off with Holyoke in double-header action at home Thursday, April 28. The team will travel to take on the Buffs at Caliche for two games on Saturday, April 30 in the final contest of the regular season.
