Pedestrian operation held recently by HPD

On May 17, the Haxtun Police Department, with the assistance of the Holyoke Police Department, conducted an operation at both First Street, Colorado Avenue and Fletcher Street. This operation was conducted due to numerous complaints that the PD received regarding vehicles not yielding to pedestrians in cross walks.

Colorado Revised Statute 42-4-802(1) states when traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger.

This operation was intended only to educate and bring awareness with no citations being issued. With the warmer weather and school ending for the summer, we will be seeing an increase of child pedestrians. It is all our responsibility to be aware of pedestrians and to keep each other safe.

This Department’s primary goal is to educate and protect the citizens, children and visitors of our community.
