85 Years Ago

June 2, 1937

Voters will go to the polls next Monday to decide upon the construction of a high school auditorium and addition in the Haxtun branch of the county high school system. According to a ruling made by the state, those persons who have paid a tax of any kind between June 7, 1936, and June 7, 1937, may vote at the bond election. Voting places will be in each of the 38 districts in the county and the polls will be open from five until eight o'clock in the evening.

Visitors at the city park in Haxtun have noticed with much pleasure the addition of several benches and camp tables to be used for picnics this summer. The tables were donated to the park by the American Legion and Auxiliary.

June 4, 1952

Hospital News - Mr. and Mrs. Lester Seger are the parents of a son born Tuesday evening. He has been named Lynn Paul.


Delbert Wolff, former Haxtun student, received his bachelor of arts degree with a lifetime teacher's certificate in the fields of music and business education at the graduation exercises May 28 at Colorado State College of Education. He plans to continue his work towards a master's degree. Mrs. Rex Meakins and Dola attended the graduation. Delbert is the Meakins' son-in-law.

June 2, 1977

Brian Biesemeier, Tony Schaefer, Beverly Wilson, all of Haxtun, and Lynda Whittington of Fleming will represent the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary at Boys' State and Girls' State this year.

Vicki L. Michael, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Michael, and Max Fetzer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Fetzer, have been chosen to attend the Coop Youth Leadership Conference on the campus of William Jewel College in Liberty, Mo.


Students from Haxtun who recently graduated with degrees from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling: Larry Boerner, Milton Frank, Rodney Kurtzer, Howard Fix Jr., Eleanor Jeffers, Douglas Reyher, Kathy Orcutt and Debra Wilson.

20 Years Ago

June 4, 1992

After 35 years in the insurance business, over 20 of those on Haxtun's main street, Darrell and Shirley Smith moved into retirement on May 31.

Lisa Ann Salvador graduated May 18 in commencement exercies at Colorado College, earning a B.A. in biology. She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the national honors society.

Sean Gillotte has been selected by Fred C. Lewman Post #137 American Legion to attend Colorado Boys' State June 14-19 at the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo.

Work continues along South Colorado Avenue in Haxtun this week as crews pour red concrete into the sidewalks in the 100 and 200 blocks of main street. Last week, the 100 block of Colorado Avenue was opened up and plans are to pour concrete in the 200 block later this week.

Don Lock is running for a seat on the Board of County Commissioners. Lock, Haxtun, announced his intent to seek a four-year term as Phillips County Commissioner for District 3 at the Lincoln Day Luncheon in February.
