June 23, 1937

Clair Saylor, 16, of Fleming, was brought to Haxtun Tuesday morning to receive treatment for severe burns on the face and chest. He received the injuries when he was scalded in attempting to remove the radiator cap from a tractor. He was given medical attention at the Mooney hospital.

Mrs. G.B. Hire and daughter Dorothy, and Maine Collins left last Wednesday for Los Angeles, Calif., where they will visit for a time with Mrs. Hire's brother and other relatives.

Vernon Dean, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Dinsmore of this city, passed away early last Friday at the family home. The baby was born on May 25 and was 25 days old. He had suffered with a heart ailment from birth.

70 Years Ago

June 25, 1952

The Post Office Department announces an increase in the rental on drop letter boxes at the Haxtun post office. Boxes in the past costing patrons 45 cents a quarter have been advanced to 60 cents. Sixty-cent boxes have advanced to 75 cents and 75-cent boxes will cost the patron one dollar a quarter in future.


Mr. and Mrs. Bill Plank Jr. are the parents of a baby daughter, Patti Jo, born Sunday evening (June 22, 1952).

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Brethren church for Bradford O. Burton (died June 16, 1952).

Another long-time resident of the Haxtun community passed away in Denver Wednesday of last week (June 18, 1952) when Eudorous L. Ramsey, 72, answered the final call.

The Fairmont Creamery has opened up a station located on Highway 6, adjoining the South Side grocery. Don and Rex Faules will operate the creamery.


45 Years Ago

June 23, 1977

A six-year-old Colorado boy was rescued after falling in and nearly drowning at the Haxtun Pool Monday morning. Kathy Wernsman, lifeguard at the pool, discovered David Moors, 6, floating face-up in seven feet of water. With the help of a training technician, she pulled him from the pool and applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and "within about a minute" had the boy breathing on his own again.

Shelly Norred, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Smith of Haxtun, completed her nurses' training at Presbyterian School of Nursing in March and graduated on June 2. She is now employed at Memorial Hospital in Green River, Wyo.

Rockland News - Max Fetzer left Sunday evening for Liberty, Mo., where he is to attend the Farmland Leadership Training this week.


Mr. and Mrs. George Edwards celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 5, 1977.

June 25, 1992

Doug Larson, Haxtun's new vo-ag instructor, hopes to draw more students into Haxtun's shrinking vocational agriculture program.

Helping out this summer at The Haxtun-Fleming Herald is Paige Fuesz, who will be a junior at Haxtun High this fall. She will be working in the dark room and assisting in production this summer.

Kindergarten t-ball players: Abraham Gregory, Curtis Harms, Austin Wilson, Caleb Howard, Danielle Smith, Greg Widgery, John Cloud, Dane Northrup, Justin Starner, Jessica Lundgren, Jennifer Smith, Jeffrey Livingston, Ryan Starner, Jeffrey Harms, Nicky Freemyer, Regan Biesemeier, Lance Atkins and Nathan Brasby.


Justin McDaniel and Damion Mosher, Haxtun High School graduates, have been recognized by Fort Hays State University for their academic achievements and will receive Hays City Silver Academic Awards for the 1992-93 school year.

Many farmers spent their Father's Day in the field cutting wheat this year, or preparing to do so - an occasion some in this area don't remember happening in their lifetime.

Niles Barnett was recently promoted to Petty Officer Second Class during a ceremony in the hangar bay of the ship he is currently deployed on - the U.S.S. Enterprise. Barnett is a 2007 graduate of Fleming High School and is the son of Holly Barnett and James Barnett, both of Stelring.
