Aug. 11, 1937

Mistaking a poison powder containing strychnine for what she thought was a stomach powder caused the tragic death here last Thursday of Mrs. Lavenna Mathews of south of Fleming. Mrs. Mathews, who was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Sanders of Haxtun, was 18 years of age and was the mother of a two-year-old boy. She was able to tell of the incident before she passed away.

Pumpkin Vine News - Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Kinzie and children left on a trip to the mountains Monday.

Paoli News - Mrs. Earle Nelson is spending this week on their farm near Dailey.

Scribes and Pharisees column - It makes us shudder when we read about the barbarous practice of India where children eight years old are allowed to marry. Thank goodness we live in Colorado where a girl must be 12 before she can legally become a bride. The Little Independent

Aug. 13, 1952

The "Youth of the Week" citations given by the Colorado Cattlemen's Association was awarded to Miss Donna Fryrear, a local girl who has been active in 4-H club work for several years.

The annual Phillips County Fair will begin at Holyoke Monday, sponsored by the V.F.W. of Holyoke under the able direction of Everette Harte. An added attraction this year will be the crowning of a fair queen in front of the grandstand on the last night of the fair. No sponsor is necessary for a girl to enter this contest. She must be under 21 years of age, dressed in a formal, and be at the O'Neal-Baldwin garage on Tuesday evening where transportation will be given to the fairgrounds. Three top winners will be chosen by popular applause. Any Haxtun girl who wishes to enter this contest is asked to send her name to The Holyoke Enterprise.

Aug. 18, 1977

Pictured in an insulated outfit: Cindy Pyle earned the grand champion trophy and ribbon at last Friday's style revue at the Logan County Fair. She is a member of the Fleming Rebels 4-H Club.

Seal coat will be applied to the Haxtun streets on Tuesday, Aug. 23. The sealer, which will be applied to most of Colorado Avenue and Fletcher Street, is a black liquid poured over the asphalt to preserve the asphalt for five to six years. It sells for $2.50 a gallon.

The resignation of Haxtun police officer Richard Jackson was accepted by the Haxtun Board of Trustees Monday. He joined the force on Jan. 1, 1974. Tom Davis, former Phillips County Sheriff, has been hired as permanent police chief at $817 per month. He began his duties Tuesday.

Cheryl Meakins captured grand champion in the junior overall performance horse and rider competition at the Phillips County Fair held recently in Holyoke.

Aug. 12, 1992

M*A*S*H is back and it's not a rerun. The Phillips County Players' production opens on Friday at the Holyoke High School. The local talent includes regular Players Gary Rahe, Sonia Hubbard, Shannon Rogers, Rick and Charlotte McAllister, Gary and Carol Krumm as well as newcomers Corby Hahn, Diana Gerk and Rod Trumper.

Breaking ground for Haxtun's fishing lake last week brought out a few interested people. Pictured are Dale Chaney, Reon Chaney, Harold McConnell, Tommy Thompson, Sherrilyn Smith, Winston Ham, Rick Ensminger, Pink Queen, Gary Haynes and Jack Falk. Construction costs are estimated at $114,075.

Casey Sumpter was crowned 1993 Phillips County Fair Queen Thursday night at the Grand Entry. Becky White was her attendant.

Dena Huss of Haxtun and Richard Gerk of Iliff were united in marriage at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Iliff on July 11, 1992. Following a wedding trip to San Francisco and Napa Valley, Calif., the couple are making their home in Fleming.

Jason and Michelle Frost announce the birth of their son, Jenor Louis Frost, on July 20, 2012 in Grant, Neb.

Twice a month a group of 30 or so men and two women meet for dinner, a short business meeting and are treated to a brief, special program. In addition, the group leads many local fundraising events whenever needed. They are the Haxtun Lions Club and they are looking for new members and fresh ideas.
