Son Up to Son Down

August 17, 2022

I can’t believe it’s time for school already. I love being home with my kids in the summer, but at this point I am tired of running my dishwasher twice a day, I’ve become a snack vendor and my house is like a small-scale version of fight club. We have had a great time together, but it’s definitely time for us to disband.

Back-to-school was my favorite time as a kid. I loved picking out school supplies, getting new clothes and coordinating the first day of school bike ride with my friends. It was exciting to think about the new teacher, the activities that would be bestowed upon you that year and seeing your friends who you hadn’t seen in forever — when really you just saw them the week before at the pool.

But what is even better than back-to-school as a kid is back-to-school as a parent. Aside from the reasoning in the beginning of my article (the first rule about fight club is don’t talk about fight club), I love the excitement my boys get about what is to come. They put so much thought and effort into the supplies they pick and tell me a little story about how they think they will use them. They ponder about their teachers, talk about their favorite school lunches, start making plans for recess, and of course, they can hardly wait to be with their friends every day.  It’s a feeling of excitement and promise that truly cannot be replicated. Don’t you wish you could bottle that feeling?

I hope your kids have a great school year filled with lots of learning, fun and special memories! Make this year the best one yet!
