Jan. 19, 1938

For the fourth successive year, S.J. Meakins of Haxtun was elected president of the Sterling Production Credit Association at its annual meeting. H.M. McKinney of Yuma was reelected vice president L.C. Rodgers of Sterling was again chosen secretary and treasurer.

Mrs. John Atkins presented The Harvest with an egg Saturday that is, without a doubt, a champion. Laid by a Rhode Island red hen, the egg measures seven and one-quarter by eight and a half inches in circumference. If you don't think it would make a good breakfast for an ordinary person, you should come in and see it.

Max Williams, Earl Carpenter and Ervin Schneider made a short trip to Denver Saturday night, returning home Monday morning, after attending the stock show.

Three members of the board of directors of the Farmers Co-Operative Oil Company were reelected for a term of two years: Frank Wilkens, Lee Dix, and A.C. Heaston. Holdover members are Ray Nimmo, president, and Rex Meakins. A patronage dividend of six percent was distributed during the business meeting.

The number of rabbits checked in after the most recent rabbit drive: 3,765.

Fairfield News – Friends and relatives of Mrs. Fred Woodham were grieved to learn of her death after several weeks of critical illness. Mrs. Woodham and her husband operated the Fairfield Store for many years.

Hospital News – Mr. and Mrs. Rex Edwards are the parents of a baby son born Monday. He has been named Thomas Neil.

Jan. 19, 1978

Three men were injured in a collision Saturday morning in Haxtun involving a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles at the intersection of Colorado Avenue and U.S. 6: Paul Ruch, 58, Eldon Salyards, 57, and William R. Jackson, 36. The semi also mowed off three gas pumps.

Luann Wilson and Sandy Wilson are reportedly both in good condition following a car–truck accident near Denver Friday afternoon.

Paul Wernsman was promoted to a position as assistant cashier of the Haxtun Community Bank. He and his wife Kathryn reside in Haxtun.

Dallas Reyher, a senior at Haxtun High School, was named artist of the month for his painting.

Reon Chaney, Haxtun Chamber of Commerce awards committee, chairman, presented Lila and Roger Munday the Fix-up/Paint-up Award for renovations done at the Tip Top Restaurant and Lounge. The owners of the business also received their first dollar plaque as a new business in 1992. Other awards: Julia Starkebaum, Julia's Fashions, best new business of the year; Rick Vanderheiden, Haxtun, Co-op Association, employee of the year; Roy and Deb Kugler, Kugler Printing, businessperson of the year; volunteers of the year, Margo Kroeger and Colleen Lockwood, co-chairmen of the Haxtun Corn Festival Committee.

Haxtun Elementary students participated in the annual spelling bee on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Briauna McFadden won the bee and will advance with other participants to the Regional bee in Fort Morgan on Feb. 13. Spelling bee winners were MJ Taylor, Logan Fetzer, Bo Soukup, Eli Meakins, Katie Gibson, McKenna Andersen, Ashley Murillo, Emily Atkins and Tyler Tempel.

Fleming senior Tyler Vandenbark signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The school has signed Vandenbark as a left-handed pitcher and first baseman in exchange for a two-year, full-ride scholarship.

It's always an exciting game when the Bulldogs face off with the neighboring Fleming Wildcats and the 2013 contest between the two teams was no different. It was a battle that kept fans, coaches and players on their feet for an extra eight minutes as the game went into overtime – twice. It was a battle that the Bulldogs fought their way from behind to tie in regulation, play in overtime, eventually taking a 58-55 victory.
