April 6, 1938

M.G. Talcott of Sunol, Neb., has been engaged as principal of the Haxtun High School for the term beginning the next fall. He will succeed John A. Grant. Last Wednesday the members of the committee went to Sunol and visit at the school, its patrons and board members. Those making the trip: Mr. and Mrs. Louis Koch, R.O. McDorman, Walter Bryant, Mrs. Gladys Hofmeister and C.W. Richards. The board recently purchased 1,000 Chinese Elms for the grounds with work done by the vocational agriculture students and their instructor, C.W. Scofield.

Carl O. Erickson, a resident of this community for the past 20 years, passed away quietly at his home here Friday morning. Death was caused from an acute gastric attack.

Haxtun senior class to present play on April 17: cast members for "Stranger in the Night" are Betty Beedle, Shirley Buck, Bob Glenn, Bob Stansbury, Jean Thornhill, Danny Walker, Nina Freemyer, Paul Garretson, Janice Bailey, Wayne Scott, Joy Monteith and Joyce Fryrear.


Dan Eugene Young, 60, a retired farmer, passed away Friday evening following a heart attack.

Fleming News - The VFW Auxiliary voted to send $10 to a member in Golden whose home burned down. Mrs. Harold Lock and Mrs. Charles Miles were hostesses.

April 6, 1978

Incumbents George Michael and Clayton (Pete) Spelts were returned to their post on the Haxtun Board of Trustees. Newcomer Vera Kloepfer was elected to her first term of office.

In Paoli, Jerry Covey, Lee McConnell and Marion Russell were elected to four-year terms as trustees while Fred Kain, Eddie Neiman and Marlon Smith were elected for two-year terms. Virgil Harms was elected as mayor.


In Fleming, Katherine Pyle, Larry Loos and John Miles were elected to four-year terms as trustees. Ralph Deines was selected as mayor.

Newly installed as commander of the Fred C. Lewman American Legion Post No. 137 is Roland Barkey. Other officers: Howard Gibbs, Don Lock, Dewey Green Jr. and LaVern Gibbs.

Overall, Haxtun science fair winners: high school, Dale Chaney, Casey Sumpter and Roy Pfaltzgraff; junior high, Melissa Harms, Dusty Ricker, Scott Hadeen and Brett Ley.

Fleming school drama class wrote and presented "Premeditated (Accidental) Murder" on March 26. Cast members: Jerry Hershfeldt, Molly Felzien, Harry Harms, Aaron Hewitt, Adriana Bricknell, Chris Mari and Todd Wisdom.

More than 80 community members attended a meeting with Bella's Market owner Sam Mancini last week. For the first time since Haxtun's grocery store shut down for two days close to six months ago, the Bella's Market owner addressed citizens' concerns, explained his company's bankruptcy process and answered tough questions in the Haxtun community.

Senior Matt Wilcox took the leading role in Haxtun High School's presentation of "The Music Man" Friday and Saturday nights under the direction of Jeri Anderson and Doug Kamery.
