April 20, 1938

Mrs. Ella Sharpe entertained with a lovely Easter breakfast at her home Sunday morning. Guests were Mesdames C.W. Schofield, Carl Zeigler, Grover Clark, Gordon McIntyre, Milton Cooper, Harold Rumin of Denver, and Mrs. Esther Ewing and Maxine Gale.

The Dunbar twins, former high school athletes, here, competed for Colorado University in a dual track meet against Wyoming U last Saturday. Boyd Dunbar was winner of the half-mile run with a time of 2:05.6 Lloyd Dunbar placed second in the two-mile run. Bill Krueger, student at Colorado State College at Fort Collins, competed in a meet with Denver University Saturday and won the broad jump event with a leap of 20'3".

Mrs. Ellis Hart and baby son came home from a Sterling hospital the latter part of the week.

April 22, 1953

Dr. Ray Groeger of Sterling will be in the office formally occupied by Dr. R.J. Ridenour beginning next week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from eight o'clock a.m. to 12 noon.


Mr. and Mrs. Roy Potter returned to Haxtun from Rochester, Minn., where Mrs. Potter had been receiving treatment at the Mayo clinic.

Fleming News - Dr. Stanley Lovestedt, a dentist at the Mayo clinic who formally lived in Fleming, has been recalled to the service for duty on April 30.

Dance Saturday, April 25, with Lynn Eakin and his Hammond organ, American Legion Hall, Haxtun. Sponsored by American Legion Post No. 137.

April 24, 1978

Dwain Whittaker, a retired official from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, joined the Phillips County Sheriff's Department on April 3. He replaced Brad Jacobson.


Emma Schoen entertained the Silver State Women's Club on April 13 in her home. Ladies present were Ethel Anderson, Ruth Atkins, Kate Augustein, Catherine Kinzie, Pearl Meakins, Viola Meakins, Nora Dinsmore, Sophia Pond, Arlene Seger, Clara Wisdom, Helene Yost and the hostess.

Mark Benesh displays the third place trophy he won at Saturday's pinewood derby contest in Sterling. He also holds the prize winning car. He is the son of Rev. and Mrs. Gordon Benesh.

Barb Wiebers of Fleming was elected president of the student senate of Lamar Community College in elections held last week. She has received a volleyball and basketball scholarship to LCC next year.


Children who registered for kindergarten in Fleming on Thursday: Cassandra Lanckriet, LaVonna Houser, Erin Carwin, Kevin Booker, and Jacob Gray.

Winners, who took stuffed animals home from last week's Easter egg hunt: Kimberly Pena and Kelsy Chaze, preschool; Jill Sauder and Patricia Cano, kindergarten; Stephanie Kugler, and Danielle Smith, first grade; Jennifer Ham and Kathleen Green, second and third grades.

Next year's, FFA officers in Haxtun: Alan, Eckman, Brian Starkebaum, Justin Lett, Chad Bamford, Casey Sumpter, Ryan Salvador, Damon Fetzer, Jessica Harms and Jamie Ruch.

The building that once housed Scor mor Lanes bowling alley along South Coleman Avenue in Holyoke came crashing down Monday, April 22. Phillips County recently purchased the building to add more space for parking around the Courthouse and for storage purposes.


The Haxtun Bulldogs dropped two games to the Eagles from Wray Saturday afternoon. The losses leave the Bulldogs at 5-7 thus far this season. Wind, snow, rain, and the cold have shut the baseball team down for much of the past two weeks, so the next few will be busy as the Bulldogs fit in make-up games before the start of post-season play.
