May 18, 1938

Dr. Limus Maurice Raring, Haxtun physician, passed away at a Sterling hospital Saturday afternoon. He had not fully recovered from an attack of influenza. He was taken to Sterling in the ambulance Friday suffering from pneumonia, which illness caused his death.

Gracie Allen and George Burns and Martha Raye head the All-Star cast of the new paramount musical comedy, "College Swing," which comes to the Rialto Theater Friday and Saturday. They are assisted by Bob Hope, who climbed into the top drawer of stardom by virtue of his single performance, as the master of ceremonies in the recent "Big Broadcast of 1938."

After keeping the news a secret for several months, Miss Ruby Bellamy and Mr. Basil B. Samples of this city announced this week that they were married on Nov. 20, 1937, at Norton Kan. They left Friday on a honeymoon trip to the West Coast. They were accompanied on their trip by the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bellamy.

May 20, 1953

Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Taylor and Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Scott spent Sunday afternoon at the Jumbo reservoir where they launched their newly completed sailboat. Mr. and Mrs. William Larson were also there to witness the launching.

Miss Patty Jones, a Colorado Springs returned there Wednesday after a few days visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Jones Jr.

Saint Peter's News - Mrs. Minnie Bailey was pleasantly surprised on Mother's Day when she accompanied her son Ernest Bailey and family to Englewood to visit their daughter and sister, Mrs. Grove. Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Wernsman and family were also there. Later their son and brother, Glen Bailey of Englewood, came to visit.

Students receiving awards at the Foreign Language Festival at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, were Cindy Edwards, Arisa Hinde, Melissa Gregory, Mary Hinde and Melissa White. Their German teacher is Amelia Wirth.

Fifth grade band members play "Austrian Melody" during Fleming's spring instrumental concert May 13: Shalan Bemus, Andrew Makuski, Vernon Riemenschneider, Tandi Wisdom, Jared Christopher, Nick Helgoth, Cole Lamont, Mandy Einspahr, Alyssa, Erlenbach, SueLinda Oberle, Tiffany Mekelburg and Sara Wernsman.

Seventeen young adults turned their tassels after receiving diplomas Sunday afternoon during commencement ceremonies at Haxtun high school. The class of 2013 chose the motto, "Don't tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon," by Paul Brandt.

Haxtun Councilman Brian Lock turned in a letter of resignation during a meeting held Monday morning May 6. Lock, one of the newest members of the Town Council, recently moved outside of the city limits, making him ineligible to sit on the Council.

The length of Fleming schools days will remain the same when the school starts next August. Board of Education members adopted the 2013–14 calendar during a meeting on May 6 after a tie vote and lengthy discussion the month prior.

The National FFA organization in partnership with John Deere has awarded two $2,000 scholarships to local students; one to Derek Whittington of Fleming High School, FFA, and the other to Janna Smith of the Haxtun High School FFA.
