June 1, 1938

H.M. Clements, Phillips County sheriff, was seeking Wednesday the whereabouts of L.M. Dietz, itinerant sign painter, who worked at Haxtun for several days the past week. Dietz is said to have raised the amount of a check given him and it is believed that he left the community in a borrowed car. The check, in the amount of two dollars, was given to Dietz by John Kirchofer. The sign painter raised the amount on the check to $10 and cashed it at the Shell service station, according to police.
