Haxtun's new junior high social studies teacher Dylan Huss is one of four new teachers at Haxtun Schools this fall. Huss along with Collyn Heinz, Riley Thompson and Jessica Japp, joined Haxtun faculty in welcoming students to the classroom for the 2024-25 year in mid-August.
Huss grew up in Iliff and graduated from Caliche High School in 2020. He attended Northeastern Junior College and later the University of Northeastern Colorado in Greeley where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in History and Secondary Education in May.
"I first decided I wanted to study history when I was in third grade. As I got older, my philosophy evolved into 'doing better for myself so I can do better for those around me.' Teaching encompasses two of my biggest passions," Huss said. "That being said, my classroom has two general expectations, respect and professionalism. As teachers, our most important responsibility is to prepare our students for the world after school. The expectations of respect and professionalism begin to build the foundation of what life will look like post-graduation. The best part about being a teacher to me is having a positive effect on those around me."
Huss said he grew up in a large family, with three sisters, and his parents always emphasized a strong work ethic and would often tell him that while he may not always be the best or most athletic player on the field, he could be the hardest worker.
"These perspectives allowed me to understand the relationship between discomfort and success from a young age," said Huss. "I grew up in a family of six, all girls except dad and I. Hard work was a major point of emphasis while I was growing up."
Since accepting a teach position in Haxtun, Huss has recently moved back to Iliff and looks forward to helping take care of the family dog, Boone. In his free time he enjoys outdoor sports, helping coach football and traveling.
In addition to social studies, Huss is also teaching a high school geography class, weights and PE.
"Having grown up near Haxtun, I have always know it is a great community. In my short time here I have found this to be true!" said Huss "I am most looking forward to the connections I build within the community!"
